Nothing like that here..... DH would never fly with paying for a spot that we don't need yet.

@JoJoGirl: Oh oh oh, okay, I didn't realize it was such an intimate setting - that's definitely different than a big daycare like we're using. I guess that changes my opinion a little - if you really like the intimate setting and the teacher(s) and other families, it could be worth it. But it's a lot of extra money for services not rendered, so I don't know...

@Adira: There's only 8 kids, it's an in-home. I don't think they have classrooms.

I've never heard of not paying tuition during weeks they are closed for vacation :( I'm so jealous other people have that option.

That seems crazy to me, I personally wouldn't do it because I wouldn't be able to afford it. I guess I would say...it depends on how much you love it.

One of the day cares we considered worked like that. Their babies move up to the next room in August so that's really the only time you can "get in". They will hold a spot up until October but you have to start paying in August.

@JoJoGirl: It seems strange that a daycare would be like that - I'm curious if this means that all the kids that start in daycare transition from room to room based on their "class" as opposed to by developmental milestones? Have you looked into that at all? It seems more schoolish than you might want for a daycare, but I don't really know.

Plus all the time that they are closed seems like a pain, especially if both you and your husband will be working. Our daycare is only closed 10-12 days of the year (holidays and the like) AND they allow you to take a week's "vacation" where you basically can take a week off from daycare and not pay the tuition for that week!

@Adira: I can only imagine people get a nanny to cover the time until August or have them in other daycares? Just doesn't seem conducive to bringing in new kids. :-(

@mediagirl: She said their contracts universally run August-August. I think it's so their spots are always full.

That is so bizarre - I don't understand why they would do this! That definitely does not seem normal to me. I can understand paying to be on the waitlist, or having to pre-register, or even paying the first week's tuition in advance, but paying for weeks (or months) that you won't be using?? I don't get it!

I probably wouldn't do it, because what will happen if/when you have baby #2? What if they aren't going to be born in August or even around there - will you have to pay for them for months while you're still pregnant?? It just seems weird!

I had to pay a fee to reserve a spot but that was only $100. Other than that, we just had to pay when we started. It sounds like the spot you are taking may be "open" at the end of August so if you want it, they want you to cover from that time until your lo starts going there?

We were lucky in that our spot was open the month M started.

@Goldilocks1107: That's the normal around here. But this is 4 weeks of vacation time (Christmas + 3 weeks in August) + a few days for continuing ed + a month at the beginning before my maternity leave ends. That seems like a LOT to pay for. There might also be a fee to reserve our spot, but we haven't gotten to that point yet with them.

We had to pay a fee to reserve our spot that equaled one week of care. And our provider has 2 weeks of vacation time, a few days of sick time and a few days for continuing ed each year. Probably totals 3 weeks tops. And she spreads it out so we don't need to find daycare for an entire month.

I have never heard of this. I know we had to pay an enrollment fee but we didn't start paying tuition until LO started.

We got a personal recommendation from a friend (finally!) for a place that seems perfect - wonderful community of moms, great ratio of providers:kids, been in business for 20 years, perfect location.

First they told us they close 4 weeks out of the year... Christmas week and 3 weeks in August. Okay, we can try to manage to pay double for childcare those weeks.

Then they told us we start paying at the end of August regardless of when LO would start. Luckily for us that's "only" 3-4 weeks, vs 3-4 months like some people might have to do. This seems more like a pre-school setup than a daycare setup and sadly I think might be a dealbreaker for us since we really can't afford to pay for that much child care we don't need.

Have you guys ever heard of this?! LO will be 16 weeks when we want to start.
