I think it depends on breeds too... I have a beagle/pekingnese mix, there is SOME level of calm down by 3-4, but I'd say 6+ started to be the best years! I do miss the puppy craziness but she's def so much easier being more docile.

My German shepherd mix calmed down a ton once she turned about 2 or 3. One thing I did that really helped was hire a dog walker who was a marathon runner to JOG my dog twice a week. The runner would come during the day and run a few miles with the dog up and down our neighborhood, which included hills, and she would be EXHAUSTED. The first few weeks she was sore on top of it, so she would just throw herself on the floor and moan. It was pretty funny.

Our Lab took about 3 years to become calm. After 3 he's been a big lazy bum :) Until then he was a mess!

Our German Shepherd/other mix FINALLY started to calm down within the past month, 1.5 months old. She still runs like crazy around the yard and gets insanely excited around guests, but at least she is calmer overall.

We have a 4-year-old boxer/pit mix (so very high energy!), and she really started calming down around age 3. When she was a puppy, we did 2-3 walks a day, dog park a few times a week on top of that, plus doggy daycare once a week, and she was still pretty nuts. Now, at age 4, she gets 2 walks a day (20-30 minutes each, longer on the weekends, with an occasional third walk on some days if it's nice out) and is pretty lazy around the house for the most part. I will say that we are pretty stringent about sticking to her walk schedule, and I think that helps.

@grizz: First off, I have to say, how awesome of a breed that is! I bet your pup is beautiful! :-) Truthfully, in my older dog I've even noticed that when he turned 1 it was a noticeable change as well. I guess I just forgot how crazy he was before then (and not I'm seeing it in my little spitfire puppy we have now!)

We have a lab/golden mix, and he really calmed down between age 2-3. Wearing him out playing ball, frisbee, etc or going to the dog park helped keep us sane in between :silly:

We had a german short hair who was a puppy until he passed away. We put him in doggy daycare and it was the only thing that tired him out. When we would pick him up after work he would walk slowly on the leash and then crash for the night.

@Maysprout: Oh I know! you can totally laugh, my husband and I just look at each other and laugh about them most of the time, because it seriously sounds like they are just crashing around breaking stuff 95% of the time! Our vet compliments us too on our older dog! He's built exactly like a lab, a very muscular 90 lbs, and the vet even told us to watch out because they are so prone to being overweight, and all of the health issues that come with that!

@MRSJX3: We have considered it, and between the cost for 2 dogs, and I've talked to a ton of people who have brought their dogs to a Doggy Day Cares in the area, they have caught illnesses, or have gotten hurt there. It just scares me, because I don't want them sick or getting hurt there honestly!

@KelLeeLeee: I'll hang in there I guess! hahahah

@Leialou: I can't wait till we have 2 laid back pups! :-)

They will definitely calm down! It might take a few years though. I have a coon hound mix who was super high energy until he was around 4. He's 8 now and very laid back.

They will calm down! I have a Boxer who just turned 3, and while she's still pretty hyper and playful, she's soooo much better than when she was a puppy :)

Have you considered a doggy day care for at least a day or two during the week? Sometimes that works wonders!!

Haha, sorryto laugh but it's so hyperly true with pups. We used to joke that we should just run them less so they needed less. We'd go out to the woods on the weekend and go for a 10 mile run and they'd be running circles around us the whole time and by the evening be like lets do that again. It does get better and it's good they have each other to wrestle with.

It's hard but it's good you're getting them out and they're moving. I just took our youngest pup (4 yo) to the vet and she kept commenting on what good shape she was in with good muscle tone and lean. She was saying she sees a lot of dogs start having health problems already at 4 bc they aren't getting the chance to run and wrestle and play around.

I have 2 young dogs, one is 1.5 years old, and the other is 7.5 months. They are both Chocolate Lab/Blue Heeler mixes. So I know by nature they are very high energy! They wrestle and play 24/7, bark and yell and anything and everything that walks past our house.

Does it ever stop?! Will they ever calm down?? hahahahah

We give them TONS of exercise too, we bring them to the dog park daily for about and hour, and 2-3 times a week, we even walk them for 30-40 minutes after the park. I could probably try and up the mind stimulation a little bit. But man, they are hyper!!
