We grew up eating young coconut. My father would peel the top layer with a sharp knife, then he would take a butcher knife and place it at the very top of the coconut and use a hammer to hit the knife firmly, this would remove the top of the coconut so that you can get to the flesh and still have the coconut water intact.

@wheres_c: thanks! I wonder if that makes it easier to get to the flesh after you drink the water?

@bunnylove08: just the various knives.

I have spent many hours and you tube videos on opening coconuts. I ruined several knives. I found a tool on amazon I plan on buying and trying.

Ok, so perhaps it goes without saying that a coconut is going to be hard to open but I just spent the better part of a half hour trying to open this stupid coconut. I used five knifes (from huge butcher knife to butter knife) as well as a corkscrew trying to get it open. I watched two YouTube videos and read the directions and still it took me forever.

Does anyone have any advice in case I stupid enough to buy one again in the future? In all seriousness should I have tried to go lower on the cap? Was my coconut not as young as it said it was? What the heck?

Eat: so angry I just wasted thirty minutes on a stupid coconut!
