No! My first was sick a ton for the first two years. I noticed this year in preschool she has been much better. Of course, we are super strict about hand washing and taking supplements during flu season, but we didn't get the flu!

And my 2nd has gotten sick a couple times, but nothing "bad" and not nearly as often! She started daycare at 6 months and is now 16 months.

I think it really just depends on the kids. My first spent his first two years sick. I can't even begin to count how many days he was home with every illness imaginable. My second was never sick. She got HFM on her first birthday and it was the first time I ever had to stay home with her. But I have a good friend with the opposite situation - her first was never sick and her second caught every day care bug possible.

@Iced Tea: nope

my first was sick ALL THE TIME

When #2 started DCP she was hardly ever sick!

I definitely found my younger son came down with fewer colds in his first year in daycare than my older son had.

Keep in mind it will depend on the kid’s immhne system too. I was prepared for a disaster when my daughter started daycare based on a friend’s experience. But while my kid caught a lot of colds, there was nothing more serious.

I can't answer about younger children yet, but my son started part time daycare two mornings per week at 20mo, and he switched to five mornings per week at 26mo. We were really lucky and never really had too many illness issues other than the fact that he sort of had a chronic runny nose for the first 6-12 months. He was only home from school for a very limited amount of time.

I really hope we are that lucky with the girls, though I am not sure yet if/when we will put them in a dropoff program before age three when our public program starts.

@Anagram: OMG, I could not handle that. I'm over here about to collapse already from the endless sickness that has plagued us this year.

@raspberries: We might be starting next week, so at least it is an easier season.

DS2 got sick a little bit, but not neeearrrly as much as DS1 did. If you're starting soon, I think this time of year helps a little bit too - DS2 started daycare in the beginning of June, after cold and flu season was over.

@Iced Tea: unfortunately yes, my 2nd kiddo got slammed with the million daycare illnesses this year. I had hoped she would have an easier time because she was older (2 years) and had already had illnesses from big sister, but still..... just since September, we've had HFM that required a week off work, literally at least 10 cycles of colds that included the gross wet cough and night wake ups, 1 case of strep, 1 bout of Flu type A, 1 ear infection and most recently a UTI which is not a daycare thing but just another ducky even that requires me to leave work early.
Sooo....

Maybe your kid will have a better immune system?

Did your younger child get sick all the time when they started daycare, even if they already caught a lot from their older sibling's first year of child care?

We all suffered a constant stream of illness this year, my 3-year old's first year in preschool. I felt so bad for the baby.

Well now I'm looking at putting the baby into daycare. Is it going to be way, way better since she caught so much this year? Or should I keep my expectations low? If I pay for full-time daycare and hardly get to use it, I just might die.
