Hope things continue to get better!

Answering your original question, lo2 was given antibiotics in the hospital at 5 weeks old. (Same thing.. cold from big sister. But he had a fever.)

Update: I called the dr at 8am and they got me in for 9:30 appt with our regular pediatrician. LO2 has been sounding pretty good all day - some congestion at 8am so I suctioned her before feeding, then nothing until about 10, during our appt, so luckily the Dr could hear it. Then I suctioned her, and nothing until about noon, suctioned agin, and it's been 1.5 hours of clear breathing, no cough.

They listened to her heart & lungs, took her temp, and watched her chest while breathing. All of those things were good. They said she is fine as long as she doesn't develop fever, troubling nursing, vomiting, or chest retractions - but in those cases, I'd know to go to ER, not the dr. I'm going to keep suctioning before each feed and clean out our humidifier so we can use it. I'm also going to check for fever more regularly though I don't know how much I trust any of our 4 thermometers.

A lot of the issue is positional. Her congestion and coughing is mainly when she's lying on her back. During the day, I've been having her sleep on her side or on my chest, and she breathes so much better that way. But at night I've had her on her back in the RnP and that's when it gets worse - and no one was home with me for the past two nights. So the ped suggested taking shifts with DH at night so we could have her sleep that way, but safely, while we stayed awake watching TV or something. Thank goodness he's coming home today.

Thank you everyone for your concern and input. I'll keep a very, very careful eye on her and I'll post if anything changes.

I don’t post a lot but I feel like this important. My oldest had RSV at 6 weeks. It was horribly scary and we were hospitalized for a few days while he needed oxygen.

Please call your doctor ASAP and tell them everything you’re seeing. My guess is they will probably send you to the ER or see you immediately.

That yound I'd absolutely go to the doctor right away. Just keep her in the stroller/babywear to kind of keep her away from everything else while waiting. I know my doctors always said within the first few months, bring them in asap because things can escalate quickly. Sending hugs!

You should take a 2 week old to the doctor. I was in a somewhat similar situation with my LOs (LO2 was 4 weeks, older LO1 had a sinus infection followed by strep, DH and I both had bad colds), and it was RSV requiring hospitalization.

Definitely take her in to the doctor. At that age, I’m pretty positive they will want to see her because they need to be monitored so closely. I would guess they’ll check for RSV.

I think you need to bring baby into the doctor and be prepared they may send you to the ER or admit you to the hospital. They DO NOT mess around with little babies - they can get very unwell very fast. My son was admitted when he was 3 days old (after being discharged home) for some weird symptoms (no fever or anything).

You could always call the Dr first to describe symptoms. But they have a very low threshold for fever/sickness in young babies before sending to ER. We had to go with our 3 week old who had a high fever and he got LOTS of antibiotics but I’m not sure if they’d prescribe at home or not. We were in the hospital about 48 hrs so if you do end up having to go to the ER, just plan for a few days. Hope your baby stays fever free and everyone gets better soon, sorry mama, it’s a tired go around when everyone is sick.

Hi! I have a 2 week old too :-) He came early at 36 weeks.

I’ve also noticed some congestion in him and that it got a little worse when on his back. We happened to have a weight check yesterday so I asked the Ped and she said that snorting/sounding congested is normal in babies, I feel like she said up to 4 months old? So she wasn’t concerned at all after listening to him (I also have a 3.5yo who sounds a little congested from school but he is pretty uninterested in the baby, thankfully, so they are rarely together). She did say we could do rock n play for a little while if it helped/made us feel better. She also said saline drops and humidifier.

HOWEVER, he hasn’t been coughing. It might still be considered “normal”, but can’t hurt to ask. Can you just call your Ped? Mine calls back I think within an hour, even after hours.
Also, ear infections aren’t contagious so at least you don’t have to worry about that.

Any illness at that age and I would bring baby in, for sure. Ask to wait in a room rather than the waiting room. I know that you said DH didn’t have the flu, but the rapid test is not accurate in adults, according to our doctor and also our neighbor who is an infectious disease dr. Case(s) in point: MIL tested negative but FIL tested positive at the same time and they both clearly had the same thing... also my DH tested negative ( but they prescribe Tamiflu for flu like illness anyway), and a few days later my son came down with it and tested positive.

Ugh! So sorry your baby girl is coughing so much. Personally, I found the nurses’ line (insurance and pediatrician) useless. For congestion, running a cold mist humidifier helped my LO. We upgraded to a really nice one since LO keeps a cold and that made a world of difference for sleep.

I would definitely go see a doctor. LO didn’t develop his first ear infection until he was a few months old, but it was after a prolonged cold- cough and congestion that I thought rest would fix. All that to say we didn’t put him on antibiotics at 2 wks old, but if we had to we would have:

She was under 2 weeks and was sick / hospitalized. I’d keep a really close eye on her (I know you will!) - I was one of the folks who said on your other post we weren’t able to keep LO2 well. I agree about calling the nurse’s line. If you do have to bring her in your doctor should have the option to not wait in the waiting room for a small baby. It sounds like that industrial strength snot sucker they have at the doctor’s office might benefit her!

ETA: NICU babies have antibiotics all the time so I wouldn’t worry about age!

@DesertDreams88: the coughing always freaks me out in a baby that young. I'd call the nurses line and ask. If you have to go in, can you wear her in an Ergo or something to keep her close to you and away from other people's germs? Good luck mama.

TL,DR: what's the youngest age your dr prescribed antibiotics, and what was the situation? LO2 is def sick but I don't know if bringing her to the dr would result in any actual treatment? And I don't want her picking up something worse when there...

Longer version: LO1, 25 month old, came down with a cough Fri night. Developed congestion, bad phlegmy cough, lack of appetite. Energy levels inconsiStent. No fever. Dr diagnosed double ear infection Wed morning and prescribed antibiotics. He has been seperate from the newborn over the weekend and physically out of the house since Monday morning (staying at in laws).

Husband came down with sickness on Monday and also went to "quarantine" at in laws. Same symptoms, but also fever, hot/cold spells, and nausea. Got rapid flu test and not flu, no ear infection either.

Both were doing much better yesterday and the plan was for them to come home today/Friday afternoon. I haven't seen either of them since Sunday night. :( :(

As of Wed night, I notice LO2, 2 wks old, had congested breathing, no other symptoms. I've been managing it somewhat with saline/sucker/steam. But the problem is whenever I put her on her back, even on an incline, she gets a hacking/sputtering cough, like she's choking. She's woken me every hour with these sounds. The congestion and cough almost disappears when she sleeps on her side (anywhere) or on her belly (on my chest) but you know that freaks me out due to sleep safety. When I put her in those positions in the daytime I feel like she loses some of her color and her breathing becomes almost undetectable. Again, no fever or breathing retractions though.

I'll most likely take her to the dr but I don't know if they'll be able to do anything for her?? I don't know. It's 3am here and I'm just a tired, worried mama.
