I did a field practicum in my final semester of university and the government agency I was placed with kept me on in a paid position when I was finished. So, job was lined up before I finished my undergrad.

I started as a temp for a scientific/lab staffing agency. I tested food for pesticides.

I started two months after graduation. I traveled abroad my last semester of school so I wasn't able to job hunt right before graduation.

I started working at the local TV station while I was in college. A sorority sister got me the job there (from that day on, I knew life was not what you know but who you know). I worked there for 2 months after graduation, then my current director got me my next job which was a BIG move. The next job after that was my first money-making job and again, I got it by knowing someone.

I delayed my graduation by 6 months so that I could do a two co-ops (AKA internship) and I got hired by the company where I did my internship. The graduation delay was completely worth it. I got experience and a full time job out of it. I tell people in the science field to do the co-op to usually secure a job after graduation. I graduated in December and my job started in January. I, also, did undergraduate research so finding the co-op positions was fairly easy for me.

@Chillybear: Yay for co-ops!

As part of a class I had to participate in a "mock" interview. Before the interview I got a bloody nose and was so over it and just went it hoping to get done quickly. However, the interviewer liked how I didn't let it get me down and asked my professor if she could kept my resume and she called me asking if I wanted to interview. I started in a marketing position 1 month after graduation, and 8 years later here I am.

part of my college's required curriculum is to do at least 1 co-op where the student takes 6 months off from classes and works full time (paid or unpaid) as an intern. my major only had 1 co-op -my husband had 3- after my 6 months i stayed on part time for 15 months and they hired me upon graduating. I've been working there ever since... this september will be 10 yrs since starting my co-op

My story is a little different because "my field" at the time (what I was studying) was totally different to the career path I took!!!

I was in my second year of university and was struck down with severe depression so I deferred for one year. While I was off, I had to take a full time job (I had bills to pay) and I saw a one year contract - an entry level position - in the field I'm in now advertised in the local newspaper. Long story short, I never went back to university and I worked my way up in my current field.

I got lucky. My job also gave me my "break" into the industry.

My brother was dating a girl whose step-father was coaching a little league team. They were going to (or won?) the World Series and he wanted to host a party to celebrate. He knew I was a graphic designer & asked my brother to ask me to design an invitation for them.

So I did. And they loved it. And it turns out the girlfriends mom was the director at a rape crisis clinic, and they hired me as their marketing coordinator.

For several years, I worked for them designig annual reports, marketing materials & other projects.

I had the job before I graduated college.

I interned during college and kept in touch with lots of contacts I met during those times. I flew cross-country back and forth to the city I wanted to eventually move to for interviews during my senior year in college. I eventually landed a job about 2 weeks after I moved to my new city after graduation and started my job just shy of 5 weeks after graduation.

It took several months because I was supposed to start a job and they couldn't get their paperwork together so I ended up needing something else in the meantime. A professor I was close with heard about an opening and recommended me! After a while they offered me a more permanent position and I declined because the job I originally wanted finally opened up - a neighbor/fellow alumni hooked me up with another alumni who made sure the job finally came through.
