Ok, I'm sorry, but as someone with a distinctly dog-unfriendly dog, I have to say that I hate... HATE... it when people walk their dogs without a leash. I know that most people probably only do this if their dog is reliably uninterested in interacting with other people or dogs, but it just makes me really uncomfortable. I don't care how nice the other dog is, if it comes up to mine, there's a distinct chance that my dog will start a fight (he is a champ at ignoring anybody who is ignoring him, and won't even spare a glance at dogs on the other side of a fence, but he is NOT ok with having other dogs sniffing him and all up in his personal space). When we walk by people whose dogs are on a leash and under control, we never have a problem, but I have no way of knowing if your unleashed dog is going to meander over to greet mine, and it freaks me out. And before I had a kid with me, I could always pick up my 37-pound dog and prevent interaction if that's what it came to, but that's not an option if I've got a baby in an ergo strapped to my chest.

@skibobrown: We just went to an arts and crafts fair where every dog but ours was in a stroller, and we were the only ones with a baby in there instead. It was really weird!

We're never going to get our 65 lb dog in a stroller though. We talked about getting a wagon for him, he's getting so old!

@mediagirl: Our pup was also a rescue, two owners brought him back before my husband took him. He was an AWFUL puppy. He was sooo crazy, my husband had a really hard time with him but refused to give him up. So compared to that, he's an angel now :) Might help that he's on prozac....

@artbee: it's ok. My two are not well trained, either. I could blame it on their breed but I know it's just because we refuse to give them anything more than love after knowing how horribly their lives began. Thumper failed the Good Canine Citizen class. We didn't even try with Clover. :)

A really short leash! Or no leash at all if thats an option.

@skibobrown: Me too! When I worked at a bank, one lady would come in and ALWAYS had her dog in a stroller!

This thread makes me laugh b/c I totally thought it was going to be about people who push their dogs around in baby strollers... which I have seen multiple times in my neighborhood. It's so weird! (I don't actually have anything useful to add to this thread b/c I don't have a dog. Sorry!)

We did a lot of work on proper leash-training long before having kids. DH bikes and skateboards with the dog running alongside him, so the dog is very well-versed in the importance of walking directly on the right-hand side, never crossing in front, etc.

@LivsMama: Have you tried a gentle leader? (http://www.gentleleader.com/) I have an American Bulldog (which is a "cousin" of a pit bull) who I trained to walk by my side with one. She doesn't "need" it anymore with me, but when a friend watches her they use it on walks and now that I'm pregnant I've started using it again (not that she pulls because I'm pregnant, I'm just afraid of what would happen if she DID).

Your dog will likely fight it like its the worst thing that ever happened to him (Gabby would stop dead and try to rip it off) but eventually they'll get used to it (lots and lots of treats! lol) and they'll never pull with it on!

Sounds like my dog is badly trained... but then again he did fail his doggy school when he was a puppy. We still love him though :)

I'm lucky that my two dogs are great on the leash already. Gabby is on the left on a 3 foot leash Lola is on the right on a (short) retractable (she usually falls behind towards the end of our walks, lol, poor little chihuahua!) Neither of them are EVER allowed in front of me and if they start acting up I stop dead in my tracks and they go back to their respective spots.

Lately, I've been walking them with my friends who have infants so they're getting accustomed to being around a stroller, but once we get our stroller I plan on walking them with it without a baby in it, lol. I may look crazy if anyone peeks in the stroller, but I'd much rather they freak out sans baby then wait to introduce a stroller into our walk routine WITH the baby in it.

But, like I said, they're great on leash, so I don't anticipate any problems.

@LivsMama: He might be trying to race your stroller... kind of like he's showing it that he's the alpha and he's going to be in front. My dogs do that to each other when I walk them - they rally for who will be an inch ahead of the other.

w walked Brutus with an empty stroller before Liv was born. He actually knocked it over the first time we did. I too would hit him (Hes a lab/pit mix) when he crossed in front of it a few times and now he stays on the side. Only issue is he still pulls (only with the stroller for some reason) so we're trying to break that

Before the baby, our puppy was taught to walk on my right hand side. With the stroller we have a carabiner that I attach to the handle of the stroller and her leash. That way she's always attached and I can hang on to her leash if she needs to be on a shorter one. I've also "ran over" her a couple of times when she crosses in front of the stroller to make her realize I mean business. It works so far.

We practiced before baby came by walking the dogs with the stroller empty (silly looking, I know). It just got better overtime with practice.

@mediagirl: It's a lot easier that way! Especially because if I'm trying to get my LO to nap she doesn't like to stop, and the dog will always stop to scratch, sniff, poo, etc. so my LO starts to fuss.

@artbee: Hmmm...that sounds like something we might need to do. I've seen others in our neighborhood with dogs like ours that never walk solo, they're always with their so when walking baby and the dogs.

We don't walk them together. I try, but it's always a mess. So I'll either let the dog out back or wait until my hubby gets home so we can all go on a walk, one with the dog and the other with the baby.

ETA: I just realized that topic sounds like everyone is in the stroller together. HA!

For those of you with kids and dogs, how did you get your dogs used to walking with the stroller? Our two boston terriers often tangle me up in their leashes. I worry about them tangling us all up and taking the stroller out.
