@keepcalmcarrie: Thanks for the idea!

I actually just talked to my ped since it's been over a week on the soy, and she wants us to try Nutramigen for 7-10 days and see what happens with that. He's not unhappy but he is barely gaining weight and she's hoping if we can get him to stop spitting up so much / get his poop sorted out that will help.

We switched to soy for a few weeks after LO had a horrible virus with diarrhea and she couldn't tolerate her regular formula. It was fine and I think it helped heal her tummy. We slowly went back to her regular formula when she was all better.

@HappyBaker: Have you considered getting Zantac or thickening his bottles? LO2 is on Alimentum formula (MSPI, so soy wasn't an option for us) but his spitup has always been insane, so we recently started thickening bottles on the advice of our ped (plus he's on a higher dose of Zantac). We usually use rice cereal, sometimes oatmeal, and I just put a small spoonful of puréed prunes in this morning - the cereal is definitely making him a little constipated, but it's helping with the spitup a lot.

ETA - I forgot my ped said that Zantac doesn't help with spitup, just reducing acid reflux so it's less painful... so that probably wouldn't help with your LO's issue.

We haven't had any issues! We didn't have issues with spit up before and we still don't have any. He is much happier! We are dealing with a little harder BM's but I think that's also in part to eating more solids.

@HappyBaker: We are doing pretty well. Spit up is significantly less and poops are getting better now that we've introduced some solids as well. Sleep at night is also vastly improved.

Like you, I'm not sure if this is all related to the soy though. Our pediatrician talked about spit up improving around 6 months. And we also did a crib transition. And we started solids. And she's figured out sitting up. It could be any combination of things that are making things better.

But for now, we are going to stick it out with soy since everything seems "better".

Sorry your spit up isn't really improving though. That was my biggest issue and it has much improved.

@MamaG: @Littlebit: How's it going with the soy?

DS has been on it for a week tomorrow, and he is still spitting up a ton and his poop hasn't really gotten any softer. I do think he seems a lot happier and more animated, demeanor-wise, but I'm not sure if that's just because he is not sick anymore and also not as crazy constipated as he was last week??

Ugh I don't know if we should stick with the soy or just switch back.

@MamaG: We're doing 1.5 oz of prunce juice with 1.5 oz of water in a bottle...but he doesn't really take it very well that way. If he doesn't drink it at all that way I actually put straight prune juice in a syringe and feed it to him that way (its just messy!). I'd probably ask your ped about the amount because every doc I've talked to in even just in our practice has recommended something different.

We've only been doing it for a few days but so far he is pooping a little better / wetter.

@HappyBaker: Yes! It's always something. She's still going but is straining hard to get out a very firm and small "pebble" She's 5.5 months so we started solids this week and pears were her first food.

How are you doing prune juice, just plain in a bottle? Mixed? How much?

@MamaG: Thanks, so good to hear! We are already doing prunce juice once a day because he is super constipated from his milk based formula, so I'm hoping that will keep him pooping. If its not one thing its something else, huh!

We switched probably two weeks ago and we saw a huge difference within about two days. Spit is almost gone and thus crankiness too. Unfortunately about a week in we started to see some constipation, so we are now working on that.

We are in the process to switching to soy right now. We're about a week in. So I can't help quite yet, but it seems to be going well!

Our ped recommended we do a trial switch to soy formula for 2 weeks to see if it helps my 4 month old DS at all. We gave him his first three bottles of it yesterday and he sucked it right down with no problem. Though I doubt it is related, this morning he had the biggest pee-full diaper he has ever had, and also had real tears when he cried instead of just being dry.

If you switched to soy, how did it go? Could you tell it was making any difference in days/weeks?

*I have read a ton about how bad soy is, yada, yada, yada, so I don't really want to hear about that if possible! Our plan is to do this for 2 weeks and then reevaluate.
