Barbara Cooney is the nec plus ultra of children's book illustrators in my book. The stories she chose to illustrate are generally really excellent, too (she wrote Miss Rumphius, but she was mostly an illustrator of other people's stories). Other illustrators I like are Trina Schart Hyman, Tasha Tudor, and Erin Stead (especially A Sick Day for Amos McGee). And I personally dig Dr. Seuss' illustrations and think they're a perfect complement to his stories, but I'm not sure I'd call them beautiful.</p> <p>ETA: I forgot David Wiesner and Robert McCloskey!
