I don't know if you count 6 as 'young kid' but our trip to the Big Island (everywhere!!) was amazing!!!! I would think 6 and up would love it. Trying to find time to do a guest blog about it.

@catlady: two years ago we rented a great little house on Ossippee Lake through VRBO, it was super fun being on the lake, and the house had a dock so we rented a pontoon boat for a couple days. We were also only about 25 minutes from Storyland, so that was easy!

Also a great hotel on Lake Winnie in Meredith is Church Landing, there's a ton to do up there and it's so pretty on the lake, and that hotel is gorgeous if you're looking more for something like that!

We're taking our 2.5 and 5.5 year olds to Portugal this summer (only 5.5 hr flight, and got a great deal on flights, cheaper than going to FL) so i'll let you know if you're looking for an international excursion ;)

@catlady: The problem is that we are doing construction in our apartment to build a third bedroom during my 4yo's spring break. So we basically need to leave to avoid going crazy!

I booked a stay at the Omni Bedford Springs in PA. We've had two great family vacations at the Omni Mount Washington and are hoping this will be similar even though it won't get me the change of weather I was hoping for.

Yes, everything is a trip, not a vacation with young kids! But we love camping as it’s low stakes and Disneyland because the magic is palpable. We’re going to Hawaii in the fall with our (soon to be) 3 kids and while I’m under no illusions that it will be relaxing, DH and I love it so much that we’re going for it.

@miss flamingo LOL, I was just coming to post that I don't really consider any vacation with young kids relaxing! I read somewhere that when you go somewhere with your young kids, it's not a vacation - it's a trip. Haha. Not to say you can't have fun, but yeah. We haven't done any real "vacations" with our 2.5 year old (just trips to visit family) .We did do a long weekend at Disney but we only live a 3 hour drive away so it wasn't a big trip.

I think once we get past the toddler phase, it may be easier.

@catlady: We went with my in laws a couple years ago with 3 kids (ages 2, 2, and 1), grandparents and us to buffalo/ Niagara falls/ Toronto and it was so fun! Loved walking around Niagara, the butterfly conservatory there, the railway that goes up and down the cliff by the visitor center was a big hit. Toronto was super fun with the zoo, the islands and riding on the streetcars! It was a busy vacation, but fun.

Our 2 best trips with LO1 have been:
- Nizuc resort in Cancun. A dream with kids. Still luxurious 5 Stars but very much caters to kids. Including drop off kids club and nannies!!!
- boca beach club. Similar concept to Nizuc but in Florida and not quite as luxurious. But still awesome.

We aren’t huge fans of beach vacations either. With kids we have liked Denver, Northern California, Austin and San Antonio… We haven’t brought the kids in a while but I think a great family area is upstate New York- look at Lake George- super super family friendly.

Argh I was in the process of picking a vacation spot when my doctor called to say that I am on travel restriction. No air travel and max 4 hrs by car. Stupid placenta. So now we are stuck staying in the NE during rainy April.

This isn’t convenient for you, but for someone else reading this thread who live further west, we took our 2 yo to Maui and I was like “oh, I get why everyone goes to Hawaii!” I mean I knew it was beautiful and all that? But it’s a truly great place to travel with kids! It was hilarious seeing all the car seats lined up while we got our baggage.

We took my LO to San Francisco when she was 15 months and are going back with both my kiddos at 2 and 4. It was a really fun vacation. My kiddo loved the cable cars, and the children’s museums, playing at the little beach at the wharf, and there are a lot of huge and wonderful parks. It wasn’t necessarily relaxing, but I can’t imagine any vacation with your kids truly is. I would 10/10 recommend it!

@catlady: My DH doesn’t love the idea of a beach resort either. The Disney cruise we took last month was actually the perfect vacation for us. We were able to get lots of beach and pool time and still do other stuff.

Other than our honeymoon it was the best vacation I’ve done as an adult. Over 10 days we did so many amazing things. We saw some of Puerto Rico, walked around old San Juan, went snorkeling off the coast and hung out on some great beaches on tiny islands. Once we got on the boat there was lots to do, including some time in the adult time thanks to the kids club. The meals were fun and couldn’t have been much more convenient. On St. Thomas we did a multi beach/snorkel excursion, had fun on Disney’s island, then went to Orlando and did Disney springs, a small bit of universal city walk, and went to a very kid friendly water park that was part of our resort.

Sorry I could go on and on about it! 😬

It's funny how many of these are beach vacations. Too bad my DH refuses to do a beach resort! I'm definitely going to look into the recommendations in Maine and NH since that's really do-able for us.

@ElbieKay: @HappyBaker: Mt Washington/Storyland/etc. may end up being a winner for us next year. :)

So far, Myrtle Beach has been our favorite family friendly destination. There's a lot for families to do, or you can just relax by the pool or beach. We did find that beach vacations, and all vacations in general really, get easier once they drop down to one nap. It's a lot of work cleaning the sand and stuff off twice a day to put them to sleep.

@ElbieKay: We went to Amelia Island for our babymoon when I was pregnant. We stayed at the Omni resort, which we loved, although the food on site was expensive. We saw lots of families there, and the kiddie pool looked really nice. I think that would be a good, relaxing family destination.

@Grace: The kids buffet definitely wasn't amazing, but I found that it was a good go-to - they always had chicken nuggets, mini burgers, hot dogs, ham sandwiches, and yogurt parfaits, plus my kids were really into the fruit on sticks (and the marshmallows on sticks).

We had a lovely trip to the Beloved Hotel in Playa Mujeres with our toddler at the time but they changed it to adults only in the last couple years. The same brand opened The Finest and we booked a stay for 2016 but then I got pregnant and Zika became a worry so we canceled. It’s still on our list, though, of places we’d like to try. https://www.finestresorts.com

Also, we’ve stayed in suites twice at the Palm Beach Marriott on singer island (near West Palm Beach, Fl) and had great times. There’s in room laundry, a kitchen, hotel amenities, a water slide, the beach, a great spa, and nice restaurants. Half of the property is hotel rooms and the other half is condos so you can stay for cheaper using vrbo. It’s 15 minutes from the airport, 5 minutes from the grocery, etc. It’s an easy and relaxing trip. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/pbisg-palm-beach-marriott-singer-island-beach-resort-and-spa/

@erinbaderin: haha, I was wondering where this great resort was when I was in Puerto Vallerta and then I realised that we stayed at the the Marival too. The kids buffet did not impress me. I remember tuna fish sandwiches which LO would not touch with a 10 foot pole. I had a hard time finding food she would eat. The suites were awesome though.

We love the Mt. Washington hotel. Lots of trains for our son. Lots of hiking for dad. A spa and a sprawling veranda with cocktails for mom. We have always gone during shoulder season (early June, early September after Labor Day) so it's not too crowded and we can usually find a discount. It is kid-friendly but elegant enough to be enjoyable by the adults.

I am currently eyeing Amelia Island for an early April family babymoon. It is in north FL so warm but still Zika free, and it looks like there are lots of nice family-friendly amenities. I just started researching today though.
