@Anagram: When/if I can share more I will! Reminds me of the time I was doing whole 30 and starving...we were by the waterfront so I got "banana ice cream" or whatever it's called. Five dollars for straight up frozen bananas! :silly: Good business model!

@Baby Boy Mom: now I'm dying to know the business idea! I feel like Hoboken is the kind of place where people are just looking for ways to spend their money. Every time I read about some idea that I think "who would pay for that?", my fellow Hobokenites are clamoring to pay for it, haha.

@youboots: I echo what you said. Portland is so walkable. And portland metro residents value walk ability and enjoy the outdoors. I honesty don't feel like it rains too much in portland. But I also grew up in a city that has an average yearly rainfall 20 inches higher than portland's.

@Baby Boy Mom: Eh it rains here but rarely snows more than an inch. I'd take rain over snow anytime. It's been really mild over the last few winters...... But shhhhhh don't tell anyone else our housing market is crazy. If you visit check out McMinnville it's my fave walkable downtown suburb.

@hummusgirl: Austin has come up multiple times. I think we like the idea of it but COL in the walkable areas is actually pretty high! Not off the table though...

@Anagram: DH is on team Hoboken! I think that's exactly the size city we would ideally launch in. Believe it or not though, I actually think COL is higher than NYC (in the boroughs) for a family.

@youboots: I was actually thinking that "I" (i.e. hellobee demographic) am actually the core target, although it's pretty broad and could appeal to anyone with some amount of disposable income. We do have a good friend in Portland that is lobbying us to come check it out. I guess I'm concerned about the rain. Do you just get used to it and no big deal?

@littlebug: Philly is one I hadn't thought of- will look into it. We also visited Savannah a few years back but I know nothing about what it might be like to live there.

Lots of Boston love here! I actually grew up there, but unfortunately the winter makes it a no-go.

Boston - America's walking city! You can walk pretty much anywhere and we all pretty much suck it up in the bad weather so people are still out and about walking even in snow, rain and cold!

NYC, specifically Park Slope, Brooklyn. Even more specifically, in the summer. :-)

Austin has a downtown area that's walkable but it's still very much a car city. Ohh there's also a neighborhood in Austin called Mueller which is being designed to be walkable. They're in the midst of construction now so it's not quite there yet.

Boston and NY are my faves. But if you're looking to invest in a business model that is dependent on walkability, the weather would make me nervous. My husband and I found Charleston, SC to be very walkable. It has great weather and a relatively low cost of living.

Hmm. I've pretty much only lived in walkable cities as an adult. NYC and downtown Washington DC in the US and 3 European cities. Both NYC and DC have high COLs though.

I'm in the Boston area and it's incredibly walkable. The nice thing is you can consider Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline as well, in addition to Boston, and they are all pretty walkable. My main complaints would be COL is very high and weather isn't great for half the year. Otherwise, it's a great city.

I've lived in Philly and I'd say it's walkable as well, but more in pockets. You'd need to concentrate on neighborhoods.

NYC is my probably favorite walkable city but COL is obviously insane.

Philly! Center City is fantastically walkable, and has so many little neighborhood pockets.

We visited Savannah and found that was super walkable. Though, in all honesty, it was a visit so we weren't looking for grocery stores or stuff like that.

Well my all time favorite is San Francisco- but the COL is awful.

I have lived in Portland and now am in a suburb. The city is so walkable. Housing continues to be a problem. But there are lots of neighboring cities with great historic downtowns.

NOLA and Austin also come to mind.

What kind of population? Who would the target audience be?

DH was proposed an interesting business opportunity but it is something that would have to be launched in a walkable location. If it's something we decide to pursue it would mean moving our family there so I would like to consider other factors while brainstorming- cost of living, weather, schools, essentially anything you would consider when uprooting to a new location. So I would love suggestions on walkable cities (or cities with walkable neighborhoods) you love!
