My daughter is just over a year behind @littlejoy s DD so I get their hand me downs to borrow & return. My Mom bought my sister several pairs of HA jams for my nephews- I get those and lots of boy/gender neutral clothes- most I keep in case we have a boy next time. I also have a friend who has 2 girls that gives me a bag each size- they are more in play condition but I'm happy to get them.

Lots of loaned/given gear which I love. My sister gave us a car seat, travel stroller, pack & play. My cousin gave me a swing. LJ loaned me a jumper. It's awesome.

I also buy consignment.

I bought a few gently used onesies along with a few brand new cute newborn stuff...and then a friend gifted me a box of gorgeous nb boy clothes that her LOs grew out of too fast! I kept getting told that newborn clothes were unnecessary (which didn't end up being true)! So I was glad I had a lot, but also glad I didn't buy much new. After he got into the 000 & beyond I didn't get any hand-me-downs so I was pretty selective and just got nice outfits that we are keeping for next time. I was so grateful for the nb hand me downs!

I have loved all the hand-me-downs we have received. But I do find that when I pick out something for her to wear, I gravitate more often to the new stuff her grandmas buy for her. So, both?

We received a mix of both new and hand-me-downs with my first and I'll admit I was a bit stuck up about the used stuff at first, but then I LOVED them once I realized that A) babies grow even faster than I was expecting and B) I didn't have to freak out as much when the used clothes got stains on them.

With this second pregnancy I'm at 33 weeks and have only bought three clothing items knowing we'd be receiving a TON of hand-me-downs. Now that we have the used stuff I know where to supplement and buy. :)

I got tons of hand-me-downs and i really appreciated it. I only realized how much i had to spend on clothes when i got to the sizes where there were no hand-me-downs. Yikes!

I obviously had a lot of new gear as well, but i welcomed the hand-me-downs.

I'm cheap, so I would be all over hand-me-downs if anyone wanted to give me any! I'm pretty much the first of my friends to get pregnant, though, so seems doubtful... :-)

I generally prefer hand-me-downs or used stuff, especially things that get used for short periods of time like baby clothes. Not only is the price more attractive, but it makes me feel better about the environmental/consumer impact. And we've only gotten a few hand-me-downs that we didn't end up using because I really didn't like them or they weren't something we used (like gowns, we just never really liked gowns). And we'll pass it all along as our son outgrows things!

All my LO's clothes are hand me downs with a few new supplements as needed. It saved us a ton of time, money, and it was great. They only wear the same size clothes for such a short time that I didn't want to be shopping for her all the time. She is 16 months now, and whenever someone asks if I want their used kids clothes, I always say yes.

I would have loved hand me downs, especially baby gear (bouncer swing etc) but we were the first in our family to have a baby and all my friends were having babies at the same time! So we got everything new. My sister is pregnant now and really excited to get hand me downs from me...and I'm really excited to give them to her!

With our first, we were literally gifted so many things, we hardly bought anything his first year except some NB size sleepers (he was smaller than anticipated) and a few different kinds of bottles.

We did buy a few used onesies, hats, socks, and a carseat bag from a Just Between Friends consignment sale just to see what those sales were like, and they worked out just fine too, so I wouldn' t have turned down hand me downs for basics. Those infant towels get outgrown so fast that hand me downs are fine too. Crib sheets are another good thing to get used, especially if you're going to send your baby to daycare and you have to provide sheets. (We often double bag our mattress with sheets/protector/sheets so if he has a puke or blowout at night, its just a matter of pulling off a layer!)

I would personally buy new bibs, burp cloths (cloth diapers are the best!), and would decline anything with stains or gear that couldn't be washed and sanitized fully.

I like a mix of both. But for LO 1, we got multiple bags of hand-me-downs from my SIL (her son is now 6), so they were pretty old and not to my taste. I felt bad because I didn't use 75% of what she gave and just picked a few pieces. I'm part of a baby re-sale group and buy lots off there... I like getting items cheap AND that I can specifically pick out what I want instead of getting bags of random stuff.

For LO 2, he's going to get all of LO 1's hand-me-downs plus some "new" items from the re-sale group, AND a few new pieces. But most of LO 1's stuff is in good condition with no holes or stains. I always toss out anything that has been through a blow-out, unless I REALLY like the outfit, haha.

Love hand me downs and wish I had more for LO1. It was pricey buying everything new, and every little bit helps. Of course there was a lot that didn't fit our style/season/gender, and we donated those. LO2 had more hand me downs, and I bought more clothes second hand.

I was very grateful for hand me downs when they were offered. We actually bought a lot of used clothes and gear from a friend, enabling her to buy more stuff for her older girls. It was like the money benefitted us all twice over, rather than it all jumping into share holders' pockets.

Having babies is expensive. It doesn't bother me if I get new or used items. If you do buy new and can get it on sale or clearance, that's even better. Babies don't care if you paid retail for something.

My friend and I have two kids each and both sets were born just a few months apart. We had opposite genders though, so with our second kids, we're just sending each other our baby clothes. It's working out fairly well, though I have bought some seasonal items and a few clothes that were just too cute not to pick up.

I love hand me downs!

Don't get me wrong, if you want to spend money on us for new stuff, I'm fine with that too. Hand me downs are totally appreciated though. We got a lot of gear and gently used clothing for L and probably 85% of it was used! There were a few pieces of clothing that weren't my taste, although even some of those got used as craft clothing or daycare spares or something.

I liked having some hand me down clothing, but used blankets tend to be yucky - it's hard to really clean them and there's usually a mystery stain lurking in a corner. I've put away blankets for a long time and they looked clean when I was putting them in the bag, but came out later looking yellow and stained. So I never take those.

We had all new stuff for DD1 and only kept a few things for DD2 so she had mainly all new stuff as well. We had lots of offers of hand me downs, but living abroad made it difficult to accept them, which I didn't mind as I'll be totally honest here and say I don't like secondhand anything really.

Also, my mom was so excited about becoming a grandma that she went a bit crazy buying clothes....and still does nearly four years on. We hardly buy any of our girls clothes as my mom buys them each a brand new wardrobe every season. She loves it, it makes her happy, and she can afford to do so, so we let her go with it. We've bought all the gear though, with the exception of the odd gift here or there.

I know it might be a bit ridiculous but I just don't like used things and would rather have all new..... :bummed:

@Anagram: same here. I would have chucked almost all of the hand-me-downs but my husband is more, um, practice/frugal than me.

I chucked stuff that I hated or was worn out/stained. You never know when there may be a good photo opp!

I have to say, though, that at almost 2yo some of our hand-me-down toys get tons of use and not necessarily stuff I would have picked.

We got lots of hand-me-downs for our first (mostly clothes and toys but we did get a hand-me-down swing too). We also bought some of our nursery furniture used from a family friend.

I voted I didn't care but I think I would have been sad not to have picked out a few special things myself. We were lucky enough to get tons of hand me downs and things loaned to us because it was things I wasn't super excited about picking like an exersaucer, swing etc. I have found that the clothing hand me downs usually wind up play clothes though.

We mostly only had hand-me-downs for baby #1 except his stroller and nursery furniture. I loved the hand-me-downs! I was so overwhelmed with what I needed/didn't know what I truly didn't need.
