When I was really little I wished I had a feminine middle name like my friends but when I was older I thought it was totally cool to have two last names. As a teenager/early 20s I used my full name all the time! My first son goes by his middle name (he and his father share the same first name). And, when people see the spelling of his name, they are horrified. But, it's the original, non-English spelling and it's in honor of his heritage. If she gets teased for it, it is NOT because you chose a name that was "too fancy", it's because kids sometimes tease each other. Like you said, it doesn't really matter whether the name is common, uncommon, "fancy" or not, family name or plucked randomly from the air. But for the record, I think it's a great name, and definitely definitely not one that is unusual enough to draw any kind of unwanted attention. As for the middle name.... Seriously, nobody is going to tease her for it. Lots of people have family names for middle names, and I think it's just about the nicest thing you could do for your baby. We gave Owen a family name for his middle name, and I (admittedly) wasn't thrilled about the idea at first. Even if someone doesn't like it, unless you ASK, it's a keep it to yourself situation. I would just say "well I don't like the name XX much either, since we're sharing! Oh well! Agree to disagree" (using their name, or a child/pet's name) just to show how stupid it is to say that. But then again I'm kind of a bitch. And THIS is exactly why we aren't telling the name til baby is born, because DH's family members (some) don't have great filters.
