Yes, all the time, because my son is an only child. People are just looking for things to say.

I hate that word... because it implies brattiness!

My children are very "spoiled" in that they have lots of clothes, toys, and attention from me and Wagon Sr. But we are crazy about discipline and structure so really, they are not "spoiled".

In general it's a horrible word because it means that it has gone bad and rotten!

Ugh :(

@kml636: exactly!!

@TurtleDoves: I guess its all about how you define spoiled but sounds like you were spoiled with love :)

@Cchoi4: I agree I do not like spoiled children and I would never raise a child without them knowing the value of things and to be grateful for what they have.

@regberadaisy: I would say they werent joking. I mean they laugh about it but I know when they say a child is spoiled they mean like a spoiled brat kind of.

@Lindsay05: are they being serious or joking?

And no, no ones made that comment to our face as least. Everyone knows I'm frugal so she has what she needs and no more, really.

Its a poor choice of words they used. that would infuriate me if someone had the audacity to say that about my child. If we are just talking about toys and clothes...come on, the kids are so young they probably don't even know any different.

that said, I don't like spoiled children and try my best to be conscientious of not spoiling mine. Spoiled children are pretty awful to be around...(i'm talking about when they get a little older)

And it's not even about buying stuff because my mom was a single mom in my childhood, taking loans out to get her degree.
But yet other kids thought WE were lucky...because "your mom plays outside with you" & "oh wow your mom braided you hair so pretty". And people thought we were spoiled. U mom was on food stamps! But we were VERY loved.

That must be so frustrating. If/When I get that, I'm going o answer with "why else would I have a child if not to spoil her?"

@TurtleDoves: thats true, she is 'very loved'!

@coacheswife123: absolutely! And so what if I buy my daughter things?! Right?!

@shopaholic: I agree! Children deserved to be spoiled!

@Crumbs: See that is how I feel. I provide for my child therefore she is spoiled? Ugh.

I guess it makes me so upset because they are really cheap. I asked my mom to buy me a bumbo and she saw one at a garage sale for $14 and thought that was too much for something she may not use. I would never ever put a price on my child or grandchild.

I would be pissed if someone said that. I normally let things slide, but if someone called her spoiled, I'd call them out and ask exactly why they think that? It might make me sound up tight, but I'm not having that crap when it comes to my LO.

I get that all the time. Even before she was born. I usually try not to take offense, because I think they don't mean it in a negative way - but it does rub me wrong when people say that. I think ALL kids are spoiled in SOME way. Be it love, material things, attention, etc. And for the ones not spoiled at all? Well, I feel sad for those little muchkins! All babies deserve to be loved and spoiled. If we don't do it, who else will?

My child is spoiled. I hate that word but Um yeah! He is my only son and I will always try to give him all that I can offer him (emotionally, physically and financially).
Don't let comments bring you down. So, what if they *think* your child is spoiled. I call it "very loved" haha.

Does anybody else get this?

My mom and stepdad are visiting and almost everytime they are here they comment on how spoiled she is. Well, let me just say that she has WAY less stuff than most babies I know. Most of the toys she has, I bought them because nobody else has bought her any new toys that help her grow. Same with her clothes. I buy her new clothes because she needs clothes to wear.

I don't want to sound selfish but I expect some sort of 'spoiledness' when she is the only grandchild for my parents. Argg!! And please dont ever call my child spoiled!
