I've put my son in time out before for making a mess (he's obsessed with the broom, so I can't sweep if he's there) and then whatever he had goes away for a while. But now that he's getting older, I try to have him at least attempt to clean up.

I woudl prob make him help clean it up with a wet cloth and then tell him that toy is off limits for a while since that is not how we play with it.

Yep, I would have made DD try to help clean it up. If she was unwilling, I would have had her watch me clean it up, and taken it out of commission for awhile (until she said she said/showed me she was sorry, for a set # of days....or something. That part would probably depend on my mood and if she had just made the mess randomly, or if she'd done it after being explicitly told not to).

I would make LO do some clean up then stand quietly and watch while I did the rest. Then the toy would be put out of reach, but within sight and be off limits.

I make them help or try to help. Even if she can't do it, she has to try and then I finish. Or I get the mess to a manageable place and make her do the rest.

I would have busted out the vacuum and had my son vacuum it, even if he didn't clean up all of it.

We would've made her help. It doesn't matter that she would've done a horrible job or made it worse. The point is helping to clean up a mess she made.

DD2 is naughtier and will write on walls and such. We make her help wipe it off despite the fact that it's pretty pointless. LOL

I would have her stand there and watch me while I cleaned it for the entire time. So it is like a time out. Depending on how that went and the talk to debrief I may go another step. Like I would have her help me clean something small she can easily do and remind her it is important to take care of the house and everyone in the family has to do their part.

In this case, I probably would have cleaned it up myself and told her that the sand is now off limits until she shows me that she is able to use it in the right way.

but it's not a mess they can clean up on their own, what do you do?

LO threw Kinetic sand across the room and it got ALL over, I should have made her attempt to clean it up but I knew she wouldn't be able to. I'm wondering what I should have done in this situation though, since she did it on purpose I feel she should have had a part in cleaning it up.
