We are choosing 3 local grassroots nonprofits to donate to in LO's name, to represent the 3 gifts the wise men brought. When LO is bigger, he can choose the non-profits for himself.

DH and I had a Christmas wedding two years ago, so every year we put up a wedding Christmas tree - it has all the silver and white ornaments used in our wedding, plus ornaments filled with curled pieces of our invitations and programs. It makes me happy

We like to drive around on Christmas Eve to look at the lights, then come home and watch a Christmas movie. On Christmas morning we'll open presents while music plays then make pancakes and hot chocolate.

We don't have any LOs yet, but many of our traditions revolve around family. We spend all day long Christmas and Christmas Eve bouncing around between houses.

Our just the two of us traditions are to decorate the tree, and sit by it and drink champagne while watching the lights sparkle on our ornaments.

we didn't really celebrate christmas since my parents were immigrants.

i guess our traditions now that we have kids are to get a tree the weekend after thanksgiving. i also want the kids to donate a bunch of their toys at christmas each year. i already talked to charlie about it, and he has been on board since last year.

and finally, they have to watch home alone, elf, and love actually with me.... every year! :)

We make a point of going to a special holiday night event every year to celebrate together. It is such a fun evening and the night ends with everyone singing Christmas carols together. I hope we are able to continue it for a long time!

The only tradition DH and I have started so far is eating a Ferrero Rocher once a day starting the 1st through the 25th. We aren't getting too into christmas this year just because our main focus is preparing for LO's arrival in two months. Maybe next year for his first christmas we will get more into it and do more things/decorate more.

My side was never big on celebrations so everything will be new!

Personally I want to focus on family, the holiday giving spirit and an appreciation for everything we have.

Christmas morning brunch, dry aged prime rib for dinner. Cooking is a huge part of our life!
Sponsoring a local family for the holidays which we started this year. And volunteering especially around the holidays, perhaps start next year.

Definitely watching A Christmas Story at least once every holiday season. ;)

Hopefully starting next year or the one after we will host a holiday party for family and close friends yearly.

Mr. Lime has been trying to make watching a Charlie Brown Christmas a thing in our house. This year I may give in. So that's one thing.

@Silva: What an awesome concept!

Our traditions are not nearly as sentimental.

Every year, we go chop down our own Charlie Brown tree. We find the ugliest, saddest tree on the farm and bring it home and decorate it. I've done it since I was a kid (my siblings HATED when it was my turn to pick a tree!) and I hope to instill my love of Charlie Brown trees in LO. I'd like to teach him to find beauty in things/places/people that may not be traditionally beautiful.

We also celebrate "Jewish Christmas" on Christmas day. Christmas Eve is for extended family but on Christmas day we spend time together, eat Chinese food, and go to the movies. LO is still young so we will be watching movies at home for a few years but will still keep with the tradition. We like to keep it low key and have quality time within our own little family unit. :)

We are doing a Waldorf style advent wreath, although we are Christian so I guess it isn't a secular thing for us. I made the wreath, need to do a blog post ASAP!

From other threads it sounds like lots of people are trying to create new traditions for their families.

I thought we could maybe share some of our ideas here!

I grew up attending Christmas eve service at a UCC church, but my family has since stopped going and moved toward a more secular holiday celebration. I talked with my mom about ways to keep the magic of Christmas without the service that I remember from my childhood (candles, songs, getting dressed up, etc.).
We plan to focus on making Christmas about warming ourselves (literally and metaphorically) as we prepare for the cold winter ahead, and a celebration of nature and winter time (my family loves winter). So we are going to create a nature table (bringing elements from the outdoors into our home, creating a tableau of "winter time"), and when my daughter is older we are going to have a bonfire!
We will still do Santa, and sing Christmas carols, and read special stories, and have a special meal on Christmas eve.

For anyone interested, I found this article: http://theparentingpassageway.com/2008/12/07/advent-and-other-winter-celebrations-within-the-waldorf-home/
to be very helpful as I was starting to think about this stuff. Here is a quote: "you can choose the festivals that resonate within you and your family in this season and little by little, year after year, bring them to light"
