@Mae: I do not have a good relationship with my father. But interestingly, DH is a lot like my dad on paper, but with the personality qualities I wish my father had. They are both mechanical engineers, they both served in the same branch of the military, they are both very smart and gregarious, and both very ambitious.

BUT whereas my dad is very selfish, reckless, impatient, and just...not nice sometimes, DH is extremely patient, conscientious, thoughtful, a wonderful provider, and puts my needs first.

My husband and my dad are not AT ALL alike, they are polar opposites! They both love me, but that's where it ends. Dad is Asian, conservative and a loudmouth. My husband is white, European, liberal, reserved and wonderful in many other ways.

My husband is my “type” and has a lot in common with my dad: clean-cut/”corporate” looking, stable, smart, devoted to loved ones, dark hair/features, liberal, atheist, laid back, dry/witty humor, *awesome*, etc.

DH fits the mold of my 'type' to a tee, except he's not very spontaneous, which I would have thought I'd end up with.

DH looks nothing like my dad, but they are both 'big' men. Tall with muscular builds.
Their personalities aren't very similar. My dad is very silly and goofy, DH is pretty serious. He can get goofy with me, but not so much in front of anyone else.
They're both very... strict? I don't' know if that's the right word, but something like that. Serious tempers too!
DH is very math-y and studious, my dad not at all!
Same values

I would say they are generally pretty similar, with some small superficial differences.

I was always initially attracted to artsy, bohemian type guys, but in reality always wanted more stability for the long term. DH is like my dad in that they both are incredibly responsible, hard workers, family guys, and both love Auburn football. My dad, though, is the most laid back person I've ever met, quite outdoorsy, and never meets a stranger. DH can be quite shy, is an engineer/tech guy, and can be a bit more high-strung.

Honestly, I think my SO is more like my mom than my dad.

I appreciate how both of them stop and think before dealing with me when I'm emotional. They're both very good about thinking about how something might affect me.

I don't think I ever had a "type." I dated a lot of different types of guys.

But DH is tall and stocky and bald, musical and athletic. He's super out going and has a billion friends.

My dad was medium height and build, and had the most fabulous head of hair. He was kind and had a few close friends, but wasn't nearly as outgoing as DH. And he was super smart and witty (something that DH never appreciated in my dad and still doesn't appreciate in me)

I had a good relationship with my dad, but I just think I never found someone like him that I loved. And I think as reserved and shy as I am, I sort of needed someone more gregarious like DH to even me out and get me out of the house!

Personality wise, DH fits he's funny, he's white, and introvert like me.

As for looks, I do like guys with brown hair but DH is blonde.

Hmm...my dad and Dh have some similarities but also some major differences. They are both fairly straight laced (in terms of clothing/hair choices--ie,., no tattoos in a million years), both came from modest backgrounds and are really hard workers who don't spend frivolously. Both naturally athletic.

But my dad was more of a jokester, extremely musical and could play any instrument--whereas my husband is more reserved around people and can't carry a tune- heh. My husband is also more technical, whereas my dad was more mechanical. Also, they are different races and different religions. ha

But my husband is definitely my type--tall, dark, handsome, educated, thin side, athletic--yup, check, check, check.

Every guy I dated, through high school and college, was either in a band, played in a band, had blue hair or was covered in tattoos and piercings. Or had long hair.

I married an engineer with short hair.

So I guess you could say I went from dating total dickwads to finding someone who made me feel at home.

They are very similar, actually. My dad died when I was in elementary school, so I guess you can read into that whatever psych stuff you may thing, it could be true. My DH is in the same profession that my dad was (a very intellectual profession). My DH is outgoing and a people person, like my dad - which complements me because I am quieter and more introverted.

Of course there are a lot of differences - but a lot of similarities too.

Physically, DH is so 100% my type, and it definitely doesn't fit in with my dad at all. My dad was a jock troublemaker in high school. I go for the artsy musician type (preferably guitar player) who is kinda thin and fair-skinned with dark hair. And it's so funny because that last sentence described DH perfectly - he is exactly the type I would've described in high school, despite not meeting my DH until years later.

As far as personality goes, I would probably prefer someone who is a little more outgoing and friendly with everyone, like my dad is. DH, while funny, is more quiet and reserved, although I suppose that fits with the artsy musician thing  The main thing that my dad and DH have in common is that they're both workaholics whose top priority is having a good amount of money saved for the future and being able to afford what they want for their family. So my dad still thinks DH is awesome because of that.

I don't know if I have a type, other than I tend to go for guys that are outgoing and speak up for themselves.

DH is very outgoing. But he's a work at home guy. He's never had coworkers ever in life. He's always pretty much been on his own schedule. He isn't handy at all, can't put together Ikea furniture or change his windshield wipers, lol. He's a very active hands-on dad with DS.

My dad is blue collar, hardworking dude, up early, home late. He can build anything out of anything, fixes it all. He's isn't the most outgoing but is good with words and is a great writer.

DH and Dad are total opposites!

@mae, I'm sure it's a factor, but for the most part, my dad's changed a lot in the last 5 years and DH and I have been together for almost 10. I always knew I wanted to marry a guy that wasn't narcissistic like my dad, though. But that's not something you really know about a guy when you first meet at a frat party, either! And i think we're mostly discussing superficial type stuff, anyways!

My husband is my type looks wise. I have always been attracted to very large men. However, I always wanted more of a "man's man" and DH is more metrosexual than anything else.

Firstly, DH is nothing like my dad, lol. I love my dad and all but no :silly:

I thought I'd never get married b/c I don't know guys that are my type. All my friends and circles are the wall street skinny suit & tie guys that love talking about cars.

I wanted a big guy that's likes nature/outdoors, likes animals (esp my dog), is handy, not more fashionable than me, so in general like a guy's guy. People are always surprised at my "type" cause while I love nature and don't mind getting down & dirty, I love fashion, beauty, etc.

DH was that perfect guy for me; and I wanted someone who loves God and he's a pastor!

The weird thing is, I always said I like tattoos on a guy (not too many), but it has to be when they were young. I'd be turned off if they're still into tattoos as adults. Lo & behold, DH has a huge tattoo on his farm from his teenage years! Def meant to be

I'm kind of an equal opportunity employer as far as a type is concerned, physically speaking. I can't imagine being with someone who was not very outdoor however, as I love the outdoors. I guess the good things about my dad I do value: love and knowledge of outdoors, mechanical skills, motorcycles. But also family values and good hearted, loves education and music and travel and culture. He is a mixed bag though.

Needed a man much the opposite of him in some ways. DH is stable and honest and doesn't think it is okay to yell and is calm and patient. And DH is more rational and down to earth and not a hoarder and not neurotic and is more thoughtful and emotionally intelligent... I could go on forever!

Oooh, I love this question. I'm really looking forward to reading people's responses.

For men, my type is artsy, hippie, musicians. I love wiry are you a vegan and/or a bike messenger builds. I like long hair, facial hair. Basically, the Jesus look plus some tattoos and/or piercings. I want them to know enough about music theory to make me feel woefully uneducated. And I like a guy with solid homekeeping and/or homesteading skills.

My sweetie is a geeky, aspie, computer programmer. Sweetie has really long hair (more princess-long than Jesus-long) and a beard. My sweetie is fit, but, stocky and muscled rather than wiry. J is hopeless as a cook and as homekeeper, but, is pretty brilliant with stuff like motorcycle repair and electrical wiring.

My dad was a mechanical engineering genius and serious misanthrope. He usually came off as being small, quiet, and reserved until he started saying something offensive. For most of my memory of him he looked covered in grease and like he'd cut his own hair with his pocket knife (because he did).

The two unifying things between my type, my sweetie, and my dad are brilliant and short. :)

. They both have tattoos (my dad has 4 & an ear piercing & DH has 8 tats.) They both play drums & are very musical & love rock music. They are both logical in their thinking & in my opinion, a little over cautious/suspicious of others. But that's where it ends. My dad is incredibly chatty, outgoing & loves people (as am I). DH is more reserved, prefers to stay at home & is a man of few words (like my mom).
ETA: DH definitely falls into my type category for the most part.

The posts on piercings got me thinking. (and I'm clearly in a procrastinating mood today... lol).

I always said my idea guy would be the owner of a tattoo shop or mechanics shop or something. I <3 lots of tattoos and like some (although prefer not a ton) of piercings. But at the same time I definitely wanted someone who was responsible and motivated and stable. So the owner of a shop like that always seemed like it would be the best of both worlds. (Don't see a lot of corporate dudes with body art! but I feel like the stereotype of just a lot of body art is a partier v. someone motivated)

Thinking on it, I feel like this comes from my dad who has a lot of tattoos (a dozen-ish) and has his ears pierced but is a general contractor so he's super responsible/smart/hardworking.

I married a corporate accountant :) Much more straight laced and white collar than I ever would've assumed I'd end up with, although he does have his ear pierced and actually is planning some tattoos (although none visible of course due to his job).

Kinda funny how that worked out! How about you? Is your husband your type? Do you think your type was based on your dad? Seems pretty common for people to "marry their dads" if they have a good relationship with them, even though I sort of didn't (well-- I did in terms of my dh being a really good stable guy, but not so much in terms of the superficial stuff).
