Anytime I'm invited for anything I bring something. I think it's rude to show up empty handed. Unless you show up early to at least help, then you earn some help back.

If you substitute cousins for your mother's siblings, it's my Thanksgiving every year. I host so that my {65+} parents don't have to, and they show up empty-handed, eat everything, and are the first to claim leftovers. Beyond frustrating.

Last year my sister finally got fed up and sent out a mass text to everyone saying that I had a new baby and couldn't handle everything, so she assigned them each something! I freaking  her!

I always bring a bottle of wine to any dinner I am invited to.

I don't think it's necessarily rude not to bring food; my mom does ALL the Thanksgiving cooking, and she wants it that way. She would be put-out if people showed up with sides, rolls, dessert, etc.

@TurtleDoves: I raised to only ask if you could bring something if you're attending a potluck. If you wanted to bring something you brought a hostess gift. If you wanted to help you came over early without the kids. In my family/friend groups things have changed with this generation and now I always offer to bring something wherever I go but maybe that's where they are coming from.

One of my moms sisters is like your aunts! She is always late and never pitches in for anything. She always asks my mom to make a pot of coffee after dinner... And always waits to ask while we are in the middle of dishes!

That is so rude! I would never attend a dinner and ask what I can bring. If the host insists on nothing I at least bring a bottle of wine or chocolates in a gift bag with a thank you note attached. I would never just bring a random dish either...that is just weird.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I get this. I'd be irritated if someone bought food and they had not discussed it with me. But, I know my mom wouldn't mind a bouquet of roses for hosting dinner 5 years in a row. Ya know?

@LuLu Mom: I am this way too. But, my mom told me to just let it be. She doesn't want them to think she needs them to do anything and she isn't bothered by what they are doing. But then again, she has always spoiled her siblings and they never deserved it. They are all adults who act like children. It is super annoying. My mom won't let me hold them accountable because their mom died 5 years ago and bla bla bla.

I'm glad you ladies are seeing my point of view! I thought I was just being too anal. I am not asking that they bring anything, but at least offer to help by setting the table or acting like this is a family event.

For me, I would be less than gracious if someone brought an unwelcomed drink, dish or dessert because I have planned out everything. It's one thing to offer and bring what the hosts requests. This year I am working on letting go, but last year my MIL brought a side dish I chose not to serve.

When we have gone to other's home we are asked to bring wine or beer and do so.

That's pretty uncool. I travel 6 hours to Thanksgiving at my grandmother's house every year, and I STILL offer to bring something, even though she always turns me down. I'd feel bad if I didn't at least show up with drinks, or a little hostess gift for my grandmother.
