I ran out of my freezer stash one month into going back to work. It took me a looong time (like 6 weeks) to come to terms with pumping output and working and breastfeeding and formula, but now I pump twice a day, get enough for one bottle, and my 6 month old gets 2-3 formula bottles during my work days.
I nurse in the morning, before bedtime and 1-3 times during the night as well. It's hard to say goodbye to exclusive breastmilk, but I only know 1 working mom who was able to keep up her supply and pumping output to only feed her LO breastmilk and not have to supplement. It's so discouraging though :-(

I had a baby who nursed all night long from 6 months to 2 years old. He was failure to thrive and I would not deny him. So my tricks: nurses him only on side all night. Pumped the other side while nursing him first thing in the morning. That have me more milk than the rest of the day combined and forced him to eat fattier milk on that side when I switched. We never had much of a stash because we tossed everything when we decided it was MSPI and it want safe for him.

We tried formula supplementing and he took it for one week while I was out of town and then refused when I came back.

It sounds like a frustrating situation. Can you go to daycare and feed one of the feedings? I did that for lunch each day. And on the day you are off you could go more often.

Also are they feeding the appropriate amount if breastmilk (1 to 1.5 oz per hour you are away). Do they have to throw out the milk if she doesn't finish?

@regberadaisy: So it's def more of the cost of it right... Going to daycare plus now needing some formula.

And I really do think it's sleep! K did 5-6 hr stretches for a while and my first pump was like 6-8 oz, last night she only did 2-3 hr stretches and I barely just squeezed out 5!

Breastfeeding really is stressful. And I'm home all day so I don't even have to worry about pumping.

My lo just started sleeping longer periods so now I'm worried my milk will decrease and she'll stop sleeping well and I won't have anything to nurse with.

I should be happy she's sleeping, instead I worry....

I have a dwindling stash and my supply drops a little bit more with each period. It'll be a miracle if we hit 12 months without supplementing (we're at 9.5). But I'm telling myself that this is literally the best I can do. I'm pumping what I can, if there is freezer milk then great (we're down to about 30 oz left from 200) and if not... welp, then that's how it goes.

I know it's so frustrating. I feel like we got past the "hard" parts early on, and expected smooth sailing to the end. Add in the "is this job even worth it" aspects and it can be super demoralizing.

You are doing a wonderful job. A is thriving (and let's face it, absolutely adorable) and that is all that matters. You have made it 7+ months and supplementing is no big deal. Breast, formula -- whatever! As long as you are feeding her, you are good to go. Don't beat yourself up so much!

I know life is stressful right now. Focus on the things you can control and don't let milk production rule your life. Easier said than done, of course!

@snowjewelz: there are no definitive big projects coming up. Although they are bidding like crazy. It would take landing a big job, I think, to change me to full time.

Oh, I don't plan on stopping! I just might have to supplement a bottle for formula on her daycare days. Last two nights she's been going 8-12 again. So hopefully I can go back to power pumping.
I supplemented regularly with dd1 so I know it's not the end of the world.

And go you!!! With my first I set mini milestones for myself and was super psyched each time I reached them. You can do it!

I know it must be so hard to see your BF journey come to an end but you're still an inspiration to me seeing that you made it to 7 mos! My next goal is just 6 mos! I just make enough with a teeeeeny lil extra and I don't have a big stash at all (max to last maybe 1 week??) so it's so stressful and such a head game!

YOU DID GOOOD!

Do you know when you would know whether it can go to full time?

@regberadaisy: I'm sorry, that is so hard! You are obviously such a good mama though, you are so smart to know that you can't burn yourself out just to squeak maybe enough milk out for her. Imagine what advantages she will have if this turns into a full-time opportunity...a fulfilled, happy mama and increased income.

Nobody can take away all the breast milk you've already given her! You've done a lot already. If you have to supplement, then that's what it takes for a happy, thriving family. That being said, you're still allowed to be bumming. Hang in there, lady

Well, I officially am defrosting my last bags. :( I'm not pumping enough to meet her daycare bottles. I was power pumping for a bit and got one bottle after a few nights. But her sleep has gone to the crapper again, even moreso, and I can't power pump after she goes down.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. It doesn't seem worth the hassle to be working this one day in the office. By doing so I have to put her in daycare two days a week (daycare minimum) and now I might have to supplement because my pumping output sucks. There is really not a ton of $ left after paying for her two days. I've been doing it only because it can potentially ( by Summer) turn into a full time position.

Just rambling.
