I've been trying to figure out alternative vacations too... we sooo wanted to go to Mexico or somewhere Caribbean. Now will have to wait quite a long time. Also, just read this, might be of interest to some: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/09/opinion/zika-is-coming.html?_r=0

@hb3233: Kiawah is gorgeous. I actually recommend going off season. We went at Christmas and it was inexpensive because it was at low capacity. Truly stunning. I prefer Sea Island as a resort but love Kiawah. Especially if DH golfs. Also Charleston is very close and is one of my favorite cities.

I've read all the responses everyone. The states seem like the most "budget" option.

I am on the east side of Canada so flying to Cali and Hawaii will be far but okay if I can get the right rate. I'm not a big fan of the east coast.

What about the outer banks? The sanderling in Duck is fantastic if you just want to plunk yourself in a chair. Good restaurants on site, very lovely rooms, and reasonably priced at the end of the season. I don't know where you live, though.
Its very hard to make recommendations without knowing a budget. You say "tight budget" in the first sentence but then throw out Thailand.. Those are not synonymous to me!!! We went to the Caymans last winter while I was 7 months pregnant. I don't know if I'd want to fly longer than that and deal with jet lag.

If Greece, Italy and Thailand from Canada are budget trips, we have very different definitions of "tight budget" :silly:

If you really are on a tight budget, the good news is most of the U.S. Is warm in late August. You wouldn't have to go very far south to get heat or beaches. Of course you'll lose some on the dollar exchange rate.

What about looking at Groupons?

For budget trips, I'm confused about Greece, Italy, or Thailand in high season.

The southeast US would be cheaper at that time of year but I don't think there are all inclusives. Those seem to be exclusive to the Caribbean and Mexico.

I second all of those pointing to nice beaches in the U.S. People don't necessarily think beach when they think U.S. East Coast, but there are super nice places that have been mentioned - on the Cape and further south. So Cal is also amazing, and probably less likely to rain. I've been to HI (Kauai) once and it was great but a pain to get to from the east coast (if you're on the west coast it will be much easier). Flight delays meant we missed connections both going there and coming back, hence we spent two nights unexpectedly at airport hotels (thankfully on United Airlines $, but still...). If you're still thinking southeast Asia, what about Malaysia or Vietnam as potentially cheaper and less crowded alternatives to Thailand? The main downside of Malaysia is that alcohol is difficult to access, but that presumably isn't an issue for a baby moon :silly:

@mrsjd: @jape14: Kiawah Island has been on my bucket list for a long time. I'd kind of given up on ever actually making it there, but your comments are making me think that we should try harder to make it happen!

Greece, Italy, and Thailand are all places I would want to save for a special future time when you could go for at least 10 days (ideally 2+ weeks) and also not be pregnant. I vote you check out Hawaii, it fills the need to be Zika-free and easy in most ways and not a huge amount of travel time. FWIW I actually found Hawaii to be a very affordable place to eat/drink/be merry on the trips we have taken there. Beaches are public/free, and food really isn't bad at all. Our last trip to Kauai we pretty much lived off of takeout from poke stands. Mmmmm. (Though maybe you're avoiding raw fish - there's kalua pork in that case.)

If there's a Zika outbreak in the US this summer it'll be Florida, so I'd probably avoid it. Late August is also hurricane season so that's another strike against Florida. I'd probably do somewhere in California or Vegas (nice pools, can go to the spa, etc).

Thailand is lovely, but the nice resort places (ie, not in the middle of party central Phuket) are very pricey, and you'll soend lots of time getting there from the US (which may not be very fun when you're in late pregnancy).

Hawaii is really not that bad. We really like staying at oceanfront condo resorts and get drinks, good coffee, fresh fruit, and treats at Costco (every island has one) and then lounging at the pool or beach. They all have communal grills that you can grill super fresh seafood on and The thing about Hawaii is that the water is like legit warm and delicious. I'm from SoCal and the beaches are nice but the water is pretty cold! We loved the Maui Kai in Maui - it's a small quiet mostly owner owned building, oceanfront, free parking, daily straightening up, across the street from a grocery store and Snorkel Bob's snorkel rental place, and half a mile from the super posh fancy beach resort area. Any of the condos in Ko Olina in Oahu is also gonna be great.
