I've been to the panhandle in May before and not seen a single mosquito. So I would go, wear DEET, and enjoy myself. However, if there were local transmissions from an actual mosquito (not brought back from somewhere else), I would cancel.

@Mama Bird: Scientists aren't sure how long after infection that there is no risk of (sexual) transmission. The CDC has some recommended guidelines:

http://www.cdc.gov/zika/transmission/sexual-transmission.html

I understand your concern. I would go. Partially because I live in south Louisiana and so theoretically am in one of the areas that is potentially "high-risk" of Zika spreading. I am 21 weeks and went two weeks ago to Florida. I agree with the posters highlighting the difference between locally acquired versus foreign travel cases.

@Mama Bird: Symptom watching isn't really effective as something like 75% of healthy adults who contract the virus have no symptoms.

I'd go and make the entire family wear bug repellent, and be on the lookout for symptoms just in case. So far they think once you get better, it's out of your system and no risk to a baby.

My understanding is that none of the cases of Zika being reported are locally acquired but rather from people who traveled abroad. I would not go to a place where there has been a reported case of mosquito transmission of Zika.

@pwnstar: while I believe there are confirmed cases in Florida as well as other states, they don't people they were contracted in those states. Instead it's someone who traveled to an impacted area and then was diagnosed in the us.

I don't believe there are any confirmed cases of Zola being caught while in the us, at least not yet.

@catlady: I get it, I just wanted to point out the risk of sexual transmission can be present for up to 6 months (allegedly). I don't think you should be worried, either. I went to Grand Cayman last week (also no reported cases) and am not worried, either.

@winniebee: That may be true but since Zika is not currently in Florida, the chances of them getting infected are almost zero. So I was suggesting they wait for peace of mind more than anything. If they become infected, they could always wait the 6 months. I am pregnant and was just in Florida last week and am not worried in the least.

@oskarsmommy: we just were faced with this decision as well with a big, long planned trip to Grand Cayman. There have not been any reported cases there, but it's in the thick of other areas with Zika. I'm 14 weeks pregnant. My OB advised if there was no reported Zika, I could go, but wear 25% Deet. If there was a reported Zika case, don't go. We followed her advice and went. I saw one mosquito the entire time and wore feet religiously and did not go out at night. It was fine.
