Thanks everyone, it looks like it might be awhile before I can actually be done. I feel like everyone around me looks at me like I am nuts when I say I am still sick so I think it was starting to get to me. It's so weird how I can be fine all day or even 2-3 days and then just get hammered by it again. This baby better be cute

@Cole: I tried skipping zofran around 20 weeks and like you, I would pay for it the next day. I was actually able to wean off of it by 26 weeks though and I've only thrown up a few times since (31 weeks now).

I had been vomit free for 4 weeks on zofran before stopping it entirely.

@spaniellove: Yes, this is very true! I had hypermesis gravidarum and my midwife recommended that I take the Zofran on a regular/continuous basis for all of those reasons.

I agree with @spaniellove on the consistency thing. The other thing that's really hard is that morning sickness (for me anyway) did not get better in a gradual linear way. After 18 weeks of constant nausea, it became a process where I'd feel better for a day or two (or even a week), and then get hit with sickness out of the blue, sometimes violently, for a few days at a time. Because I can't really predict when these fits will happen, I've just decided to stop taking Zofran and handle each episode as it comes.

@Cole: I can understand wanting to take as little as possible, but what I've found is that you have to be consistent with the Zofran even when you're having better days or you'll pay for it later. So decreasing and then increasing your dosage again might make you super miserable and you could really regret it. I was taking it for only nausea and if I skipped a dose thinking I was getting better, everything came back with a vengeance. What I learned was that I wasn't ready to start weaning off until I had several days to a week of consistent improvement and even then I couldn't go cold turkey; my midwife switched me to Zantac.

Sorry, I know it's really tough right now.

I never vomited, but I had horrendous nausea- like can't even sit up nausea. I started off taking Zofran I think twice a day? It was prescribed for 3x a day but I started out with 2x and it worked. Around 3-4 months I was able to get to 1x a day- first thing in the AM. I remember feeling the same way- wanting to wean off of it. I would skip days and sometimes that backfired- and I had a dose a little later in the day. But eventually I was able to go to every other day. And I was completely off of it by 32 weeks. It was just a guessing game. I would basically opt to not take it and if the nausea reared it's ugly head, I'd take a dose. I never came close to exceeding the 3x a day that I was prescribed, and when I took it I felt better within a reasonable amount of time, so that worked for me. I hope you can figure it out!!! And hope that it goes away soon for you!

@Anagram: Thanks, that's good to know. I really wish they were clearer about all of it. At my last appointment she said something about me hopefully not needing it much longer and I should have asked for more information.

@Cole: I think you'll know. My doctor kept encouraging me to "take breaks" to "check and see if I was better and didn't need it". At that point, I was still really miserable even WHILE taking it, so even though I thought it was crazy I would do it...and then get way, way worse until I was back on it and had a good amount in my system (I was taking it every 6 hours around the clock).

SO eventually I stopped taking the Zofran breaks and just took it continously. When I stopped feeling miserable while taking it (there was a marked difference in how I felt), then I just stopped taking it cold turkey.

I think when you don't need it, you'll know.

@Anagram: I guess I have had a few days where it's just nausea so I thought I was coming to the end? Maybe I am being just too optimistic, I wish I had a clearer idea of when to ditch it.

@Cole: what is your reason for wanting to stop the medication when you are experiencing pretty severe symptoms?

I took zofran from 8 weeks until my nausea was totally gone--around 18-19 weeks I think. I was one of the lucky ones who finally got out of the nausea stage--but I would have taken it until the end if I'd needed it.

I am 19 weeks and am trying to figure out what is going on with my morning sickness and how to wean off of medication (and if that is even possible at this point). I don't see my midwife for two more weeks, I could call though.

I have been taking B6 and unisom, initially just half a tablet, then we upped it to a whole tablet and added 4 mg of zofran taken once or twice a day (with the option of a third but I only had to do that once). Between the two 80% of the vomiting ended and I am mostly just dealing with nausea.

The issues:
--The whole tablet of unisom isn't working as well so I frequently vomit first thing in the morning now, my theory is I just got used to it so I decided if I throw up either way I may as well try backing down to a half tablet again for a week and then upping it again. Thoughts? I could also get the prescription version filled which is time released but the co-pay is $40 which seems silly.

--I would rather take as little zofran as possible, often I can take it late in the morning and still manage to get enough calories in and not throw up or only throw up a little so typically I do that. If I am having a great day I have tried to skip it which usually goes fine until the next day. For example, I skipped it yesterday but now it is 1pm and I have thrown up a few times and barely eaten, I will likely need to take it twice today since usually the first dose on a day like today just takes the edge off and I need the second one to be able to eat.

Sorry this is so long, I remember going through this when my dad had cancer and finding the balance is so hard. I have half a mind to call palliative care since I feel like the midwives were guessing just as much as I am.
