glad to see this! I was struggling a few months ago and started Lexapro after a huge internal struggle. It has made such a fantastic difference. I'm still on it..but just in case any other bees come across this thread :) I was hard pressed finding threads about it when I searched.

@citymouse: I took it for about a month. It really helped clear the fog in my head. It wasn't too strong, and when I didn't refill it, I didn't feel like a crazy person. It was just enough to make me feel a little better. Like a nice boost that I really needed.

It also didn't take 2 weeks for it to affect me...more like 2 days.

I've been taking Zoloft for about 9 months for PPD. I've recently decreases my dosage from 75mg to 50mg without problem. However I also tried weaning myself off completely and ended up going back on. Two nights in a row I started crying while singing to LO at bedtime and getting some serious road rage in traffic. It made me realize that I probably should still take it. I don't feel reliant on it, it just helps even out my mood. I would like to get off of it before trying for LO#2 though.

I've been on it since 3 weeks PP. I tried going off it at around 4 months PP but it didn't go well. I'm back on it now and going to stay on it until LOs first birthday before trying to go off of it again.

I don't think there is any harm in taking it, especially after everything you've been through. It is there to help cope during times that are difficult/times of chemical imbalance.

I've been on it several times, mostly for anxiety. The first few times I never felt dependent on it at all. I went on it most recently when my dad was ill and I was having a lot of anxiety related to that. When he passed away, I stayed on it to help with grief and I didn't feel dependent, but I was nervous about going off of it. I stayed on it for 2 years after his death. I have done well emotionally since coming off several months ago, but physically I always have a hard time coming off. It took me about 2 months to taper down and I had a lot of dizziness/nausea. I took 100 mg if that makes a difference.

If you feel yourself sinking into a depression and your doctor feels that it would be beneficial it is worth trying. It has been really helpful to me at times and I have gone long periods in between without using it and done just fine. Thinking of you.

I started taking Lexapro at about 3 months postpartum for PPD/anxiety. LO is almost a year old and I'm still on it. Some days I think I'm ready to start weaning off of it and others I think, no way! So I don't think I'm quite there yet.

From talking to my doctor, my understanding is that it's fairly easy to wean from, though I haven't spoken in depth with her about it yet.

I was on Zoloft for a year for PPD. I had a great experience. It was just enough to zero me out. After a year, my hormone related anxieties were substantially decreased and my coping skills were much better so it was no problem at all to wean. I hope it helps you! I'm sure it will.

@Dandelion: I took half my normal dosage for a week or so and then stopped completely. I actually felt ready to stop earlier but my doctor advised me that people often have a tougher time coming of the meds if they aren't on them for at least three months.

I just stopped taking Zoloft after being on it for approx. 9 months for PPD, and I've taken it before in the past to deal with severe depression. If you feel that you need it, I think you should take it (or at least talk to your dr. again about it).

For me, it was crucial to have something that gave me a balance and that happy momentum you wrote about so that I didn't get too sad or upset at the things that triggered my depression. I still needed to work through my personal issues, but I felt like it was "safer" to do that while on Zoloft so that I didn't get too depressed (if that makes sense).

Have you considered counseling in addition to Zoloft? That combination helped me a lot. When you go off Zoloft, you ramp down, so you should be able to tell if you still feel depressed (or more depressed than you have been) on a lower dose.

Be careful about starting and stopping Zoloft on your own - you need to ramp up/down, not just take it and then stop cold turkey. Just FYI in case you didn't already know this! :-)

After my miscarriage last year, I started taking celexa. I actually called my doctor and told her, in tears, that I needed something because my close friend/DH's cousin's wife had her baby 2 days after my D&C. It was just too much.

I got off of it when I got pregnant again this time, but I really think I could have gotten off earlier. The first few months after the miscarriage were really hard, but I started feeling better. I just had trouble because I didn't know if I would automatically be depressed again if I got off them or if I was actually doing better with the depression itself.

I think once you get in a better place (find a house, start TTC again) you probably won't need them and you can start weaning yourself off. It really does help though when you're in such a low place.

I took lexapro for a while which is similar. My issues were more based in anxiety than depression but I used it for about three months and then weaned off of it no problem. I think if things are getting worse instead of better you should go ahead and take it.

I was never on Zoloft, but I took Prozac for a while in high school and again in college. Both times, i was going through periods of extreme stress, anxiety and depression.

I dont think I was in any way dependent on it. I look at it as a tool that helped me through a rough patch. I was able to come off of it both times with little difficulty and felt normal afterwards.

At my postpartum check up, the midwife prescribed me some zoloft that I filled but haven't started taking, yet. I told her how I didn't know if what I was feeling was grief, hormones, or PPD. She said it's probably all of it.

I've been in denial about needing to take it. But, it's mostly because I don't want to be dependent on it. I just want to get a happy momentum going for a few months, until we get in a new house and things start looking better.

This week with losing the house we thought we were getting made me really feel like I was spinning more downward into depression. I'm really feeling that I need to take it. I just don't want to feel like this again once I stop taking it.

Not sure if that makes sense, but I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with this?
