@pachamama: or check with your family doctor! That’s my specialty and I do prenatal care and have some informal lactation medicine training and prescribe tons of mental health meds. There are lots of options that are safe. Wellbutrin is one to maybe discuss as it’s known for being much less of a problem with sexual side effects. Of course it depends on what you have going on as well.

The big O is definitely harder to come by for me on Zoloft but not impossible. Worst side effect for me is the night sweats!

@pachamama: two pediatricians (my husband and our kid's doctor), and my OB were all TOTALLY fine with me taking lexapro while breastfeeding. Like, didn't even bat an eyelash.
I experienced insomnia while on zoloft, and couldn't make it past about a week the last time I tried it. I have zero side effects with lexapro.

@pachamama: Highly recommend going to a psychiatrist. The OB probably only knows about/prescribes a few anti-depressants. There are so many different types that might work for you. You should really see a specialist in this area to get the best result. And it might take a few tries. I did not like my first psych and ended up switching to an awesome one. Also, don’t give up on meds so soon because of side effects. You can switch and it might make a world of difference (it did for me). It might take a little while to find the best combo/dosage for you. It’s so frustrating waiting for that to happen, but so worth it if it does.

@annem1990: . Thanks for this, interesting what you wrote. my OB technically wrote the script, she has no in-depth training I'm assuming with mental health issues 🤔

I know for sure I could not handle two months of insomnia. Being tired makes my anxiety so so much worse.

@pachamama: I had insomnia for the first couple of weeks too, but that went away as well. I did switch to Prozac around that time (was on it through pregnancy and breastfeeding. I went to a perinatal psychiatrist and she said the only no-no SSRI in pregnancy is Paxil). So I guess I’m not sure if the insomnia improved just with switching the med or getting used to the SSRI.

Your psychiatrist may not be up in the latest research on pregnancy and BF with these meds. My first had a whole list I couldn’t try, but I switched to a psychiatrist who specialized in anti-depressants and research in pregnancy and said that was all false. She gave me all of the latest research and the vast majority are safe.

It took me about 1-2 months after starting an SSRI to be able to orgasm again. Took maybe slightly longer than before, but not a huge difference.

Just talked to my therapist and we're going to stay at 25mg.
@crazydoglady: way worse than before I started taking it... Can't stay asleep and I'm also experiencing some really bad anxiety and depression that was never this bad.
@gotkimchi: I'm EBF so it seems like there aren't a ton of safe options. 😣

I have been on zoloft whole adult life, so I don't even know if they could be better etc. But how are you doing otherwise? You might be on too high of a dosage.

It can be a side effect. There are other options - I would talk to your doctor about making a change

I've been on Zoloft for 12 days starting at 25 then 50mg for some PPD and anxiety. As soon as I started taking 50 I've been completely unable to orgasm. (And I have it down to a science- it usually takes me 65-75 seconds. I know, I'm weird.)
Does this unfortunate side effect go away? This is a deal breaker for me. 😣
