Our first kid went at 2 1/2 and has been going every six months since then. Our second kid is almost 2 1/2, so we'll be making an appointment soon!
When did your LO go to the dentist for their first visit?

She's almost 18 months and I need to schedule her before our dentist goes on maternity leave!

I took her for her first visit week before last. She's 15 months and has 8 teeth.

Following this. LO is 18 months, but won't even let me in his mouth let alone a dentist, so I'm curious on how everyone's LOs did!

@rattles: What did the dentist do, and how did it go? Definitely curious!

DD went for the first time right after she turned 3. We got as far as the tech watching her brush her own teeth; she wouldn't let the dentist near her. We tried at again when she was 3 1/2 and she let the tech exam her teeth but again the dentist was a no go. We go again in about a month and am hopeful the dentist will be able to get a peek this time. Our dentist has been awesome with this and since she isn't having any problems he is fine with our progress.

@mrbee: She cleaned her teeth, asked questions about family dental history and gave more personalized advice about how to take care of her teeth. As for how it went, it's POSSIBLE that DD bicycle kicked the dentist in the face while I pinned down her arms...
I was actually surprised - she LOVES brushing her teeth, and we'd been reading a book about going to the dentist for a few weeks and talking through what to expect. The dentist was so sweet with her though! She let DD sit in my lap and snuggle a toy lion with teeth while she checked her teeth out more. They recommend you go when they get their first teeth or by their first birthday, apparently, so they're used to tiny ones. We'll be going every six months now.

15 months.
Gah, DD2 is almost 15 months! Guess I should take her soon although she did get her teeth checked briefly during DD1's last appt so I think I will hold off.

I am scheduled my 17 mo. old son's first visit soon. As Rattles said, I believe most Pedi's and dentists recommend going around 18 mos or by 2 years at the latest. I am dreading it, as J hates me brushing his teeth.

Right at 2. She did very well and sat in the mini dentist chair by herself. It was a quick check in-check up-check out routine. The same 6 months later. At 3 she had a full cleaning, all by herself in the back. She did awesome! They got through a few x-rays too but didn't push her to do the whole lot.

We actually went last week, at 23 months. He had them examined, scraped a little, polished and flossed. It's was a fast job, so not perfect, and he bawled the whole time, but he survived. As soon as they sat him up he was fine and then got a balloon, so he was thrilled. We have the best pediatric dentist ever!

We tried at 18 months and failed. We will try again at 2.5.

My son went at age 1 -- he got a fluoride treatment and basically they showed us how to adequately brush his teeth. My daughter didn't have any teeth at age 1 so it seemed pretty pointless but now she has a few so I guess I'll get her in there. The recommendations seem to vary. Our pedi said age 3 is when they need to go, but our insurance started covering cleanings at age 1 so that's what we did.

We still haven't gone yet at 15 months!
@rattles: Do you mind me asking which dentist you go to? I remember you live in Chicago too and we need to find one!

@dolphin: Sure! We're going to Dr. Kristin Elliot at Growing Smiles on Southport. My own dentist referred us to her, and she had great reviews. I really loved her! She has two little girls of her own (2 and 7 months) and was so sweet with my DD.

15 months! This makes me feel better as I have read that you are supposed to go when LO gets their first tooth...I was feeling guilty about waiting so long!
