Hi, My son will start Kindergarten about 6 weeks before we give birth to our second child. I feel like so much has changed in the baby world. We still have cloth diapers from when my son used them, but I have no idea of what the current baby trends are. My husband and I went to a baby store to look around the other day, and we were kinda intimidated by all of the new high tech things that are out there now. Please tell me that we are not alone. lol

I don't blame you! My kids are exactly 2 years apart, and even then I'm seeing new gadgets I know for sure didn't exist with my first!

@FancyGem: I noticed the same thing with our three year age gap but also I was able to save some money because I just didn't care so much about all the stuff. I knew a little bit about the tried and true methods.

If we decide to have another child, I'll be in the same boat. Around 5 years apart and starting all over.

@FancyGem: @youboots: Our two are a little over 4 years apart (our youngest is 2.5 months old right now), and it's been really great so far. We also don't know much about the latest baby trends - but we've just been using most of our things from 2012, and it's been working out just fine.

@youboots: So far it's good. My son is pretty helpful and independent. He has acted out a little, but it's getting better.
@LilSprinkles: We were hoping for a 4 year age gap, but it didn't workout like that.
@Beehive: Is your oldest helpful? I'm curious to see how he is when the baby is born. I may enroll him in an older sibling class.

@FancyGem: He's been really helpful, and very into the baby. We don't ask him to do too much (we don't want it to become a chore for him), but he is great about fetching things, arranging the pillows for nursing, and entertaining the baby (though we do need to remind him to be gentle, as he gets all up in her face).
The best parts of the age difference are how independent our son is, and how the new baby hasn't affected him a great deal (at least, not outwardly), because he has his own thing going on, with all-day school, friends, playdates, etc. This may change as she gets older, but at the moment it's all love.

@FancyGem: my oldest is almost 5 like yours and our second will be 2.5 when baby 3 arrives -- we got nothing new except a double stroller when we had our second. So I don't know really about the new stuff either! Not looking to buy anything new this time either

@winniebee: We will start off focusing on the essentials. We will need a new carseat, stroller, and baby monitor. Things like that.

@FancyGem: my son turned five two weeks before our second arrived! My second is 5 weeks now. The age gap has been great, so far. My first is pretty independent and has been a really great help. I'm really liking the age difference so far.
We also were starting from scratch. We had purged most baby stuff years ago.
But I think because I've done this before, I didn't get hung up on all the new stuff out there. I kept if simple because I realized babies need diapers/wipes, a place to sleep, clothes, car seat and that's it. Anything else is extra!
It was kind of fun starting over and getting all new stuff -
@Mrs. Pen: That's true! I gave away his baby clothes, but I kept most of the big stuff just in case.

My son just turned 5 and I'm due with #2 next month! I'm really happy about the 5 year age gap because DS is so independent, like you said, and he'll have kindergarten and summer camps to keep him busy. He is actually pretty helpful too in these last few weeks of pregnancy with bringing me glasses of water or fetching stuff for me while I'm a beached whale on the couch! I don't know if much has changed in the last 5 years. If it did, I'm not paying attention.

@FancyGem: My kiddo will start K about 9-10 weeks before #2 arrives, so definitely understand! we got rid of everything after having some losses, so besides some clothing and a crib, we're starting from scratch. Everything seems to different, and like there are so many more options, even in just these short few years!

@endymion4: We decided to start with the basics and build from there. We know that we need a stroller, new car seat, and bedding.
