DD has long curly hair and its usually in what I call doc mc stuffin style braids that last a week or two. Washing and putting her hair is braids is a whole process! Her summer camp will have swimming 3 times a week and she is really overdue for swimming lessons so i as signing her up.
I am wondering how to deal with this, keep her hair clean of chlorine without having to rebraid it a trillion times a week. Any survival tips are welcome

i don't have experience with AA Hair but I wonder if she'd tolerate a swimming cap?

@Silva: i have thought of those but i know from experience they don't keep your hair dry.

I'd have to check with my sister in law, but my niece wears a swim cap about half of the time. She rinses her hair with water before she puts on the cap and then rinses again afterwards. She usually has braids or ponytails and doesn't take them out before or afterwards.

@Mrsbells: The only caution with a swim cap is that it can pull at the edges and take some strands with it.
I’d probably arm yourself with some a Wet Brush, and cheap hair conditioner and just plan on detangling her hair on swim days. Just Hold Water or some swim place at the mall has a product you apply beforehand to protect hair from chlorine.

Not specific for AA hair but -- my swimmer friend recently gave me the suggestion to put a lycra swim cap on first, and then a regular rubber swim cap over top. That way, the hair will stay dry due to the rubber, but the lycra doesn't pull on hair as much (rip it out!).

I have the opposite of AA hair, but what I always did was thoroughly wet my hair so it would be less likely to absorb chlorine, then cover with a silicone cap (doesn't pull), then rinse afterwards. The black kids at the camp I worked at followed a similar process and while their braids didn't last as long, they at least lasted a week (5 days of swimming)

I wouldn’t do the swim cap...
I’d rinse her hair and use a lot of moisturizer after each a lesson. Make sure her pillow case is satin it helps with the hair and not “drying it out”. A lot of moisturizer is imperative. I’d use a deep conditioner as well and avoid the shampoo- only once a week....
Aloe Vera works very well as a moisturizer and coconut oil.
So my point is let her swim with her hair out and just undo the braids after each lesson- do a light wash with conditioner, moisture and re braid and/ style....
