I have a policy through my employer that costs a few bucks but my husband has the full on plan since he's a small biz owner. His kicks in after 6 months of disability and goes until he's 55, but it might be 60 now - he's been talking to our guy to renew this year. When he first got it 5 years ago at 30, it was cheap, like $500 a year, but we have accepted the insurance company's offer to increase the monthly payment for slightly higher rates so I think at this point we pay around $1,000. We make our agent shop it around every year so it changes all the time. Our rates are pretty low but a lot of this is that my husband is a patent attorney so for him to be unable to work at all he'd like have to be in a coma or blind.
