I don't really understand what short term disability is? I work for 2 different companies but don't have benefits through either one, because I am on my parents and my husbands insurance and because I make my own schedule so some weeks I don't work at all. Anyways so if I don't get benefits if I went on maternity leave I'm just sol right? What is short term disability and FMLA?

Each paycheck you have several thing deducted including Federal Income Tax, Unemployment and SDI (State Disability Insurance). If something happens that disables you, you can apply for short term disability and for part of your absence from work you receive income. California allows you to use 4 weeks of short term disability before birth, and 6 weeks for a vag/8 weeks for cesarean afterwards. Your 4 weeks from pre-labor cannot be carried over to afterwards. Disability is completely separate from any work benefits that you may receive, but usually must run concurrently with any paid or partial paid time off.

@anonysquire: Yeah. SDI is a state thing. Check out one of your pay stubs. Once it lists your initial pay, it'll deduct several items (3-5) and then list your take home pay. One of those items will be your disability contribution for that paycheck.

I think it differs by state though. In FL, there is no state disability. I have STD through my company, not through the state. If you don't have STD through your company, you may want to look into other options, like Aflac. Also, maybe your company offers maternity benefits that you don't have to pay into?

Also, some companies pay for a private short term disability policy for employees. Those usually cover up to 60% of your income up to 26 weeks. My company offers short term disability to employees after a month of service and we get 100% of our pay, so I think they pay the rest out of pocket for us.

@anonysquire: I saw that you are from Utah...you aren't going to like this. It looks like Utah does not have a SDI program. I could be wrong, but I checked 3-4 websites, and they all seem to say that UT doesn't do this. http://blog.laborlawtalk.com/2007/09/27/utah-short-term-disability/
It doesn't even look like your company is required to give you 6 weeks off for recovery. I'm sorry. -
Mine is company provided. I got 60% of pay for 4 weeks so it was about an extra $2000.

@MaisyMay: So giving birth is technically something that disables you? Funny because when I wasn't given any paid maternity leave I wasn't told about that option.

SDI is the only one I was able to receive because I haven't worked at my current company long enough. -
My state does not offer STD, it is strictly optional through my employer. There are private companies that offer STD, have you looked into that at all?
