Nope! We skipped all cereals and went straight to fruits and veggies.
I told the dr that and she said she only recommends cereals to formula fed babies because they don't get as much iron as they would in bm.

I was planning on not doing it, but I think I'm going to make some for her. I have so much frozen breast milk & she won't take a bottle, so I'm going to use it with the cereals. we've already introduced some fruits & veggies to her, though. cereal & those flake things weren't her first foods

We did it, but the iron made her so constipated and that made me sad. We do it once in awhile now, like, less than once a week.

I don't plan to but of course my husband heard from his co worker who's old enough to be my mom that you're suppose to start with rice cereal. Will be asking about starting solids at her 4month so hopefully my ped agrees with me!

We skipped it, blw so far and she's doing great. Had a piece of peach today

I bought a box of baby oatmeal, and tried it once after he had already had some food from our plates. It just looked bland and not fun to eat, so we went skipped ahead to mushed up veggies, fruits, grown up rice and oatmeal.

Well, we do baby led weaning, but even if we didn't I wouldn't do rice cereal. Pick something with some nutrition!

We did it, but she didn't love it so we didn't do it for long.

@Magilnyc: Lots of reasons!!
There is no real nutritional value in grains for babies. I've also read a lot of articles that grains can be a lot harder to digest by babies as they only produce the digestive enzyme lactose for milk. The digestive enzyme amylase is needed for grain digestion and their bodies don't make that until after they're a year old!
Fruits and veggies are really all they need.

@regberadaisy: I do think it's one of those previous generation mindsets. Back when my mom and my oldest sister were babies, pediatricians and "baby experts" were saying that formula is BEST, and breastmilk is inferior. Look how the information has changed over the last 30-50 years! I do think it's becoming the same way with solids... more and more families are skipping cereals and going straight to fruits/veggies. Do what you think is best for Baby M!

@cocobee: ya the reason why i dont want to do it, is tht there i no nutritional value and ive heard that it can be linked to childhood obesity too.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@stargal: oh yes!! I've heard that too.
I mean, if you think about it - the best foods even for us are fruits and veggies, and also protein such as nuts, dairy and meat. But carbs have never been shown to be good for us! Why would that be any different for us?
When I gave up grains (all grains, not just gluten) for a month - I immediately lost 10 lbs the first week! It was crazy!!

We tried giving rice cereal and oatmeal to our DD a couple of times, but she doesn't like either, so we just do fruits and veggies.

He actually gets a small amount in each bottle to help with his reflux, so technically he's already eating it. But, I had no plans to do any grains at all until much later, just because I don't see nutritional value in them. He's at the tail end of his reflux, I think, and I'd like to stop adding it eventually, but I'm worried he'll notice its absence. So we might be stuck with it.

we are starting with veggies but will also give her rice, oats and fruits as well. so we wont be "skipping" rice, but we wont be starting with it either.

@Magilnyc: Mostly just that it's sort of nutritional junk - there are so many good reasons to start with a fruit or a vegetable puree. More nutrients, more flavor, a general better start for a baby. I never followed the advice about giving my baby bland food, and as a result, I have a 13 month old who'll eat chicken so spicy it makes her tear up. And then gleefully bang on her bowl demanding more.

We only gave her brown rice cereal a couple times; she didn't like it too much. Now we mostly give her multigrain or oatmeal.

I pureed oatmeal a bit later, and mixed it with pureed or just smashed fruit. That was a big hit.

We skipped it especially after the recent finding of arsenic in rice cereal. My mom keeps pressuring me to do rice cereal, so annoying!!!! We recently just introduced solids and started with roasted butternut squash. She looooves it!
@Coco Bee: good to know! I was worried about the iron.

@stargal: I wasn't going to, but then I wasn't super happy with the way he was eating meat and I'm concerned about iron levels now that he's turning 6 months and I'd rather him eat rice cereal than give him an iron vitamin, so I just started rice cereal today.
Edit: it is organic, brown rice cereal

@sarac: ooh what kind of oats did you use? What did you cook it in?
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Coco Bee: yup! Started Wednesday night! I had just roasted butternut & acorn squash. I wanted to be able to serve her some fresh stuff prior to freezing the rest and my husband agreed!

@regberadaisy: I just used what I had around, quaker oats. I pureed it, and then added the powder to freshly microwaved purees - no cooking. Later I ground it far more coarsely for more texture.
pomegranate / 3192 posts
No I don't want to use it, the texture grosses me out!
@regberadaisy - there is research out there about introducing solids before 6 months and a link to type II diabetes, just something to think about...
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@QBbride: thanks - I'll have to look into that because there is a history of diabetes on my husband's side.
