A very close friend just had her first, she lives in another country and we might see them once every few years. She just named her son Finn. We've been flip flopping about names but DH's front runner is Finley for DD2. Should we drop it off the list? Or is it different enough/we won't be interacting often enough for it to be a concern?

Since you won't see them that often and live in another country I think it's ok. You might just fly your name choice by her a la..." congrats on the birth of Finn! What a great name! Finley is at the top of our list...we all have great taste! He's adorable!"
You validate her choice but she isn't caught off guard if you name your kid that. -
I think it's fine! My daughter is Anna Caroline and one of her her best friends (who lives five minutes away) is Ava Caroline.
Funny story- We were pregnant at the same time again for our second babies and we almost named the girls the exact same name! I ended up going with something different that I felt went better with DD1's name but I couldn't believe it happened twice!

I'd do what @Littlebit7 suggested. If you love a name you love a name and it's often hard to come up with a favourite you'd be willing to use I find. Plus they live extra far away so you won't see them often. The only reason I would not use a name is if a family member had used it or if it was the name of a still living and young family member (which includes some of my favourite names).

One of my best mommy friends from having #1 named her #2 the exact same first name as my #2. Mine is about 4 months older and we moved away soon after I got pregnant. I'm guessing they'd picked it well before we announced our name at his birth and didn't want to change it since we now lived far away! It didn't bother me I think it's cute they have the same name (just occasionally confusing!).

Maybe I'm rude, but even if it was someone I saw all the time I'd still name my kid it if that's what I liked.

Just go for it! We have two cousins with the same name in my family and no one cares - the moms of the two boys laugh about the fact that neither of them would give up the name (they were pregnant at the same time)...they are just names and will be unique individuals! Go with the name you like.

If you like it you keep it! I'd personally give the friend a heads up though and mention you guys are thinking about Finley so that they don't think you "copied" them but apart from family I would not let anyone's name choice affect mine.

The names are similar, but she has a boy and you have a girl and you're adding -ly sound.

Thanks everyone. We're last minute namers so we go in with a short list and see if she looks like that. I don't know if we'll use it but DH does really like it.

My LO's name is Finn and I don't think I'd even make the connection between him and a baby of the opposite sex who was born months later and named Finley. I say go for it!
