I don't think it's weird at all.

I honestly didn't even notice that we named my LO the same thing as my cousin until my mom pointed it out. It's a classic name though so tons of people have that name. I think it may be weird if its really unique, but otherwise, not weird at all.

In your case with all the details you provided, I wouldn't worry and I would use it!

Our second choice name was my cousin’s kids name. My cousin said it was fine to steal.

If it was a super uncommon name then I wouldn’t but it sounds like it’s something really common like David.

Nate is really high on my boy list and I have a cousin named Nathan. We see each other maybe annually, I don’t think it’s weird at all. I think he’ll be flattered and think I named the baby after him and he’s childfree so I think he’d be excited.

We almost chose one of my cousins names. It didn’t phase me at all.

To me, the only names that are off limits are those of my nieces and nephew. Every single other name is fair game.

I wouldn't do it, but I think my entire friend circle would without question. I'm a Jessica from the late 80s, so I was definitely out for unique! If my Brother and SIL stick with what they've always said, they're planning to do it when they have kids.

@nanilani: would you mind if people in the family thought you named DS after this cousin? That would probably be my only hesitation. I personally don’t think that I would want to duplicate a name with an a family, even extended family, but it seems like your situation is far enough removed that it won’t be confusing. In your shoes, I would probably want to make sure that I had a good “reason” (even made up, or something vague like “it’s a solid biblical name”) For choosing the name on hand in case someone asked.

I’m trying really hard to put myself in your shoes, but I only have six cousins. Ha! DH has at least 3 times as many, but he isn’t close to all of them. I guess if the name was unusual are particularly memorable I’d probably not do it. But for a regular or classic name then I’d may consider it.

Mine is a bit of a different situation. My 1st son shares a name with one of my cousins and one of my other cousins kids. They are all named after my grandpa- so we do not care at all that they have the same name. They are all in honor of a really great man.

My 2nd son (Harry) is named after my husbands grandpa. 3 months before he was born, my husbands cousin named her kid Harrison and my husband was devastated thinking we couldn't use the name anymore. We did and it is just fine. Again, they are both named in honor of a really great man.
