@JoJoGirl: I haven't had this, but a friend of mine's firstborn had a single umbilical artery. He is a thriving 6.5 year old today! He does have a lot of food allergies, but that is not at all related to the umbilical artery.

@JoJoGirl: She had multiple ultrasounds and he was on the smaller side (6 pounds), but she was 39-40 weeks when she delivered (not induced, she actually went into labor two days before her induction). I'll pray for you guys.

@JoJoGirl: Im so sorry youre having to deal with this extra stress! It sounds like the good news is that they are planning to do extra monitoring to ensure baby is progressing normally and will intervene at the first sign of trouble. While not ideal, it does sound like a good plan. I know that does nothing for your stress level though!

Do you have a follow up with your OB? I hope they give you a better plan of action

@JoJoGirl: To be fair, both of her kiddos were under 7 pounds. Both she and her husband are tall and thin, so her babies were tall and thin as well. Her son is on the smaller side now, but it's because of his severe food allergies limiting the things he can eat.

Not personally, but I've had several patients with SUA. Most go on to have perfectly healthy kids. One child did have some health problems, but there was more than just the SUA visible on ultrasound. So I think that the fact that your ultrasound was otherwise normal is reassuring. Keep in mind that though there is an "increased risk" for those things, it's still more likely that things will be fine. Just something that makes them watch things a little more closely.

My son had SUA in utero, too. He is now a healthy 16-month-old. He was born on 40+1 at 7 lbs, 12 ounces. We had a few extra ultrasounds but, really and truly, if everything else looks perfect, try not to worry. Trust your doc, and don't let yourself Google too much-it'll just worry you! Feel free to reach out if you want to talk specifics.

I believe my friends son had this and she too had extra monitoring. He is a happy, healthy 2 year old. It was very nerve wracking for her but everything turned out fine. Sorry you have this added stress!

I had sua with dd1. It meant frequent ultrasounds, two fetal echocardiograms, and a plan for an immediate nicu stay as some of her fetal echo measurements came back borderline towards the end of my pregnancy (they wanted her in the nicu until she could be evaluated by a pediatric cardiologist, which could have taken up to 24 hours post birth). She was born 7lbs, 10oz and everything was perfect. She stayed just about 24 hours in the nicu and was discharged once the cardiologist gave the ok. Dd1 is a happy, healthy, thriving 3yo today! My baby has a two vessel umbilical cord, which I think is similar. I also have had poor test results during my first trimester screening which could lead to a potential problem with the placenta.
I have been seeing my family doctor the entire pregnancy but have also been under monitoring at my hospitals Maternal Fetal Concerns Clinic. I've been getting growth scans every 4 to 3 weeks, and will be starting another type of scan weekly for the last few weeks. But my baby has been measuring consistently at around the 50th percentile and everything is looking great. Because of the issues, I am being induced though at 40 weeks, if I don't go earlier.
