LO has had a bulge in his groin and I don't know why we didn't think much about it. Until tonight, when we noticed it's much bigger and extending into his scrotum, and DH realized it's probably a hernia. Poor baby does not need this right now...

I think that most peds won't do anything about a hernia until LO is at least one year old. I'm pretty sure the hernias go away for a lot of babies by then. Hopefully J's goes away on its own!

We talked to the pediatrician. He said it is a hernia and we don't need to take LO into the ER tonight but it does need to be treated soon and he needs surgery.

@spaniellove: oh no mama! I'm so sorry, you have been through so much! I'm wishing all the best for your LOs upcoming surgery.

@spaniellove: He does need surgery if you've noticed it getting bigger and smaller. If it is a fixed size that doesn't change (a hydrocele) then that usually goes away on its own. Make sure you see a pediatric general surgeon or a pediatric urologist. They've done this thousands of times.
I'm sorry you're going through this, mama.

I just feel like I did such a crappy job making a baby and he's suffering so much.

@spaniellove: no, no, no-NOT your fault. He is gorgeous and perfect, and YOU are what he needs. J is a very special boy, and he is going to be just fine because he has you to advocate for him!

@spaniellove: It is not your fault at all. Please don't beat yourself up about it!

Oh, no. I'm so sorry he has a hernia. Don't feel bad either. I'm sure it happens. The Dr didn't seem too alarmed. Hugs!!

I had a hernia at 6 weeks that required surgery. It was no big deal! Good luck to your little guy, he will be just fine!
Don't brat yourself up! My mom had nooo idea either! It only was noticeable if I cried while she was changing my diaper. She took me to the peds 3x after she saw the bulge once and they could never see it either!!!

@swedishfish: that's true for umbilical hernias. Inguinal and femoral hernias need fixing.
@spaniellove: sorry you're dealing with this but it's a quick surgery, quick recovery!

You did not do a bad job making a baby. Time to erase that thought from your mind. He's great, and you are wonderful. These things are normal, they happen, and they are not your fault.

Groin hernias are super common. I work with pediatric surgeons that do that surgery. It is a super easy recovery, not very painful at all, LO will prob just take a few doses of Tylenol. The thing most parent are the most concerned about is the anesthesia. Make sure you go to a pediatric hospital and the anesthesiologists will be super good and experienced.

@spaniellove: You are a great mother and will help J through this!!! You are not responsible for this happening! Hugs! As my mother would say, "this too shall pass." You will get through this!

My LO had an umbilical hernia. Not exactly the same thing, but similar. We watched and waited and it didn't fix itself so LO had surgery just after her second birthday. The pediatric surgeon was fantastic. He fixes dozens of hernias per week on kids. He was so gentle and reassuring. The surgery was less than 30 minutes and the worst part was coming out of anesthesia. LO was running around hours later as if nothing happened. Kids are resilient and this is going to be a lot harder on you than LO. Hang in there.

@spaniellove: You did not do a crappy job! You are the best mama he found ever wish to have I'm so sorry you guys are going through so much.

@Seattlemom: It is the anesthesia, and we are going to have this done at a pediatric hospital.
By itself this isn't the biggest deal in the world but it came at the end of a day where we got the paperwork for the tests he needs, like MRI w/ sedation, EKG, etc, and had a long discussion about the cochlear implants and that his loss is profound in one ear and severe in the other. Please just make it stop.

Hugs! Hope surgery goes well! And do not blame yourself! Things like this happen!

@sapphire: ohhhhh, you're right.
@spaniellove: you're such a good mama advocating for your LO. Sorry I was wrong above. I hope J is fine.

@spaniellove: perhaps you can ask to get the MRI done at the same time as the surgery so he only has to be sedated once? I'm sorry you're both going through all this, it's a lot.

Aww. I had an inguinal hernia and they didn't repair it until I was in kindergarten. I'm sure it will be a simple surgery! Sorry he's having so many issues.

I'm sorry you're going through so much. This is not your fault. My friend's baby had a hernia, treated surgically, and now other than a tiny scar, it's like it never happened.

I'm sorry that you are all going through so much! I guess, silver lining, all of this is happening when he is far too little to remember it. I hope that things look up for you soon! It's time that you had some really good luck.
