Have you tried calling them by that name? Just to see if the name fit?
DH had to ask me what our backup names were for the twins. Luckily, I kept a list on my phone. I would have forgotten.
Yeah, the names we picked fit our babies now and the backups do not.

I didn't have a back up name for my daughter but for my son, his back up name was Prince. It could have worked for him.

We were pretty set on our name but I actually think another favorite would have suited her well. But we love her name and it's perfect.

Dd1 we were pretty sure on the girl name early on, no back up (team green). DD2 we knew was a girl but we had such a hard time. We had another name at the top of the list until a week before she was born, so I guess if she had been early she probably would have been Hazel! We still took ten hours after she was born to totally decide. I've tried it out and she definitely is better with the name she has.

DD2 got the back up name 
It was one DH was pushing for and I really liked, I just had a few reservations. But I got over worrying what others thought by the time #2 came along 
it seems weird now if we'd have flipped them.

@bluestriped bee: Funny you should ask this! I haven't tried calling him his alternate names but I was just thinking about them yesterday. We had 3 others. 2 fit ok, one does not!!! But his name is best

No! She doesn't look like an Olivia at all. I think it would've worked for a middle name though. I'm saving it for a middle name for DD two if we have one.

LO2 could totally be Marshall, our runner up. His name works equally well. I can't see him as any of the other top 10 on our list.

She definitely couldn't be the backup name. I really loved another name though that my husband vetoed and she absolutely could be that name too. I still love it but since I feel like daughter could easily be that name it feels weird to think of using it in the future.

My son's name was always pretty solid and we had backups but they weren't serious. I could imagine calling my daughter something else.

Her back up name was Abigail - and she is SO not an Abigail. (I do still love the name though, but I got a bit sketchy about our nicknames being similar - Aly/Abby.)

My son was named something different for the first 12 hours of his life. It never quite fit, so we changed it to another name on our list that just suited our little guy better! I had a hard time loving any boy names that my DH wouldn't veto, but this name just stuck and we love it, it's perfect for him!

DD1 we didn't really have a back up name, DD2 I wasn't totally sure of until we saw her, but that was it- have never tried out any back up names, because she just IS her name.

DD1: her backup name could have worked (although it is now her sister's name, and it fits her way better.) The third name actually would have worked really well too I think.
DD2: no way, she's totally not this name at all! it was a long name and very traditional and she's this small slight thing, and it just wouldn't have worked for her at all.

I think the backup name would have worked for her, but I'm glad we didn't go with some of the other options at that time. Some of the names we liked would have been too trendy I think

We had no back up. We waited until he was born to see if it fit, but I don't know what we would have done if it didn't! I can't imagine him with any other name!

Our back up boy name was Oliver. It took us 8 hours to choose between Oliver and DS's name because we wanted to make sure it fit, and I still feel like we made the right choice.

We were positive for her first name but not at all decided on a middle name. We had a long list of 25 options, with the intention to decide after her arrival. It took two days to decide, but I think we made a great choice. Looking back at the list, I think only one other name would have been as good as the one we chose.

We had planned to call DD by a nickname of her middle name, since both DH and I go by a nickname of our middle names. We actually picked the middle name first (Caroline nn Carly) and decided the first name only because it flowed well with Caroline. When she came out I knew she was definitely not Carly!
With our current baby, we plan to name her Julia.... Our other two favorites are Alice and Helen so we shall see who she is!
