So I JUST found out I am pregnant. I also have an appointment to color my hair tonight.
I'm just wondering if this is something I should be worried about and cancel or if I can go?
I know there is a bit of controversy on the topic but some extra advice or knowledge would be really great. thanks.

@.twist.: Are you coloring your hair all over or just doing highlights/lowlights? I wouldn't be concerned about either based on what my doctors have told me, but definitely wouldn't think twice about highlights/lowlights, because the product never actually touches your scalp, so there's no way for it to get into your skin/bloodstream. I've continued to get highlights/lowlights throughout my pregnancy with my doctor's blessing.

I would go personally, I don't know all the facts but i'll be continuing my hair appointments throughout pregnancy.

@bpaig: I am getting it colored all over. red. I'm considering calling the salon and asking them what they practice for early pregnancy?
@MrsTiz: This is kind of how I'm feeling, although it makes me a little nervous this early.

I think you're fine since I don't think your skin will be absorbing a large amount of chemicals to affect your baby. Just make sure you're in a well ventilated area!

I wouldn't go-- it would make me too nervous, even if it is entirely unjustified. Also, doesn't red have to sit longer than most, to get the color to stick or something?
But, I have only colored my hair a couple of times in my life, so it would be out of the ordinary for me to do something with it anyway. I would just feel more comfortable waiting a few weeks.

My stylist told me that I was fine to colour my hair in early pregnancy. Apparently they cover that as a topic in beauty school!

I'm sure you'll get a bunch of different answers to your question. it's really up to each person and their comfort level. I myself, would probably just postpone til later in the pregnancy, but that's just me. I did do Japanese straightening on my hair during the last weeks of my 2nd pregnancy though.

@.twist.: I would think you're ok, but I agree with @Alivoo01 to make sure you're in a ventilated area. Your hairdresser is one of the people that I would recommend going ahead and telling that you're pregnant, just so she can take as many precautions for you as possible. She may even have other options for color if she knows you're pregnant... For example, I go to an Aveda salon, and all of their color is plant-derived/organic, so there are a lot less chemicals in it, and that made me feel better. Maybe she could use something like that?

@PrincessBaby: Thanks! I have a slight problem in telling my stylist though. She's family (granted she's extended family) but I'm just unsure if I should tell her or not. I mean, I think it would be smart because I 100% agree with you, this is just kind of where my dilemma happens!

@.twist.: Oh that IS a tough call! I didn't even tell you Congratulations...So Congrats on your BFP! And good luck with your hair decision:). FWIW, I just scaled my hair appts back... I went from getting highlights every 6 or 7 wks, to waiting longer stretches.... Like 10 or 11 weeks, but I still kept getting my hair did!

Depending on what you have your hair colored with, I ended up with semi-permanent dye! The smell didn't bother me, either.

@.twist.: If you're doing all-over red, one thing to think about is that you'll have to go back for maintenance throughout your pregnancy. Maybe go with red highlights instead or something, if the all-over color makes you nervous? I told my hair stylist but you're right, her being family does make it kinda tricky for you

@bpaig: I'm not sure highlights would work. They might, but I'd have to ask. My hair is actually fully black but we color my roots bright red. which sounds weird... but it looks pretty awesome.

I think you're good, just watch our for the fumes! They make me sick sometimes even when I wasn't pregnant! And thanks for the reminder, I need to re-dye my hair this weekend!

I followed the advice not to dye your hair in the first trimester, and then I am sticking to vegetable dyes after that..
It might be overly cautious, but hair dyes are full of chemicals and the skin is the largest organ of the body. I just don't feel comfortable doing it in the first tri..
Do what you feel comfortable with. Like every risk in pregnancy there isn't a black and white, just shades of grey you have to make countless judgemental calls on (sadly!).

Congratulations!!!! I got my hair highlighted when I was 5 weeks pregnant but I was only comfortable with it because I knew my salon is always well ventilated. Happy and healthy 9 months

The not getting your hair colored is just the latest example of modern hysteria-pregnancy. There is not and has never been a link to harm to a fetus from it. Someone just decided that it 'wasn't a good idea' and now pregnant women avoid it 'just to be safe'. Totally unwarranted.

I realized, while sitting in the hairstylists chair while my hair was being colored red, that I might've been pregnant with DS2. Obviously I was in the middle of my color, do I couldn't stop what was being done. After that appointment I rushed home to take a test and, lo and behold, I was right!
DS2 is a happy, healthy little 13 month old, so as long as your in a well ventilated area, you are probably just fine!

I've been getting my hair done with no troubles! I had a level II ultrasound today for other issues and she was just perfect so don't worry!!

I'm sure you're at your appt already but wanted to share that I got my hair colored twice while pregnant I asked my midwife about it and she said that as long as the smell didn't make me sick, come off too strong and I stayed in a well-ventilated area, it's not a big deal.
I did it at about 14 weeks and again at 30 weeks.

IDK about the hair coloring situation, but I say just do whatever you feel comfortable with.
