My son's first teeth are coming in. He keeps biting my nipple when he is nursing. Suggestions are welcome. I am currently using the nose-holding trick when I panic during a chomp. It seems to be worse when he is distracted by noise (e.g., people talking while he nurses).
Two days ago he bit his own arm and then started to cry. So, I'm pretty sure he just doesn't understand what is going on.

Whenever Xander bit me, I would almost always yell "Ow!" and startle him, oops. But I think it helped because he definitely got better at not doing it. Also, I had to make sure to watch his moods. If he was distracted or looking like he was almost done nursing, I would gentle unlatch him so he wouldn't bite me. It's rough, but as your LO gets used to his new teeth, he'll get better at not biting you.

ditto @Adira: I would yell "ouch" and it would startle them but at least they would stop - I think I only got bit 2-3 times and then it stopped
Also once they get more teeth you may to have to help them learn to latch again with a bigger mouth (I did with my kids) otherwise the teeth really irritated my nipple

@Adira: same. I'd yelp when she bit and it startled her off, then I'd tell her no biting, that hurts mommy (which she totally did not understand of course). If she bit again, we took a break the switches sides. If she but on the other side I ended the session.
She would do it for a day or two with each f her first few teeth, so during those phases I watched her really carefully while she was nursing. When she looked almost done or was getting distracted I ended the session right away before she could bite.
Luckily it only ever lasted a few days at a time- those bites hurt even without teeth!

T doesn't have any teeth yet, but he has started gumming me and clamping down which still hurts!!! The other day after the 5th time or so I pulled him off and really sternly said "No bite! Ow!" And pointed at him. He broke down in tears and his feelings were hurt (I may or may not have cried too out of guilt) but he has maybe bitten me once or twice since and definitely not as hard.
ETA: I remember reading this in Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding that that was the best way to stop them from biting (yelp and startle them to let them know that it hurts). I thought maybe, maybe not on whether it worked or not. I did it to T out of frustration and not on purpose so I guess it does. Haha
