What kind of books would be appropriate for an 8 year old girl? My niece is 9 but has an above average reading level, I'm not sure what this little girls reading level is. I really want to gift her a book, but not knowing this info, how would you go about it?

Knowing nothing about a kid I'd get The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall! Or Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin.
The Penderwicks was a National Book Award winner and Grace Lin's was a Newberry Honor book.

@Mrs. Pen: Good suggestion, and I agree! I'd go with a nice illustrated version of a classic in this case. If she's not ready to read it herself yet, she can still enjoy the pictures or someone can read it to her. There are nice hardcover versions of The Secret Garden, Alice in Wonderland, Heidi, Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables, all of the Narnia series, The Hobbit, etc.

My niece is 8 and my other niece is 7 and I bought them a Roald Dahl book set (BFG, James and the Giant Peach, etc.) and Judy Blume book set (Tales a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge, etc)

I teach 8-10 year olds. Goosebumps and diary of a wimpy kid/dork diaries are the most popular. Some of my more advanced kids have started reading Harry Potter.

@Truvy: I was also going o suggest the Roald Dahl gift set. I think 8 is the perfect age.
I got mine at Costco and put it away for a few years for DD.

I second Goosebumps, Wimpy Kid, and Dork Diaries! I have an 8 year old and she is super into Goosbumps lately!

I agree with those who say Dork Diaries and Roald Dahl books. When I taught third grade I did a Matilda read aloud and the kids loved it.
