I just called my insurance and was told a pump was 100% covered (maybe that's the norm?) and I can choose whichever one I want. I know NOTHING about pumping but I plan on introducing a bottle around 3-4 weeks to prepare him for when I go back to work.
Anyway, any recommendations of a model for a FTM?

I've had both the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra and the Medela PISA, and I prefer the simplicity of the Medela.

I have the medela freestyle and love it. Rechargeable battery operated, so you don't need an outlet if you have to pump somewhere weird. You can also just clip it on your pants amd if you have a hands free pumping bra, you can walk around and do stuff while pumping.

I have a medela freestyle, a PISA, and a Freemie. I like that I can just slip the cups of the Freemie into my bra and NOT have giant horns sticking out or undo my shirt. And it works with a regular bra! I'm by far preferring it. It's also quieter

I have the Ameda and the Pump In Style. I found the Ameda to be a little more uncomfortable but easier to keep clean because the milk went right into the bottles instead of the tubing. I was always a little paranoid about the cleanliness of the tubing in the Medelas.

I've had the Ameda and Hygeia. I like the Hygeia best, it's strong, comfortable, and easy to clean. Medela parts will fit it too so spare parts are easy to get.

Had the pump in style snd freestyle and majorly preferred the freestyle. It's smaller, lighter, totally portable, doesn't need to be plugged in and I got more milk.

@LindsayInNY: Same with me, and initially I thought Freestyle was better since it was more portable. But I have the PISA and have used it for over 3 months and I like it just fine! I did buy the car adapter and the battery adapter and that definitely saved me a few times when I had to pump and there's no outlet!
I also have the Ameda Purely Yours but don't like it as much. PISA is the one I use daily at work.

@snowjewelz: Ah. That's what I was wondering about... So the PISA is plug-in only but there's a battery adapter? I might have to get one. I have a couple of Ameda options too - Purely Yours and Purely Yours Express.

@LindsayInNY: Yeah I think this is what I have - http://amzn.com/B000HL2JOC (I got it from Target). It does take a billion batteries, but I've pumped probably 5 times and I haven't had to change them out yet. Plus if you have rechargeable batteries then it's even easier. I 90% pump at work or at home so there's really only been a handful of times I needed that. If I pump in the car then I have the car adaptor. I just didn't want to add $100+ just to get the Freestyle.
I don't like the Ameda even though you can adjust speed/power separately.. For some reason it just makes my nipples sore after even though I got the "correct" size flange as I did for the PISA.

@LindsayInNY: Just chiming in here! I also have an insurance-issued PISA that I use every day, at home and at work. You can get a car charger and/or a battery pack (http://www.amazon.com/Medela-Battery-Style-Advanced-Breast/dp/B000HL2JOC/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1433176528&sr=1-1&keywords=medela+battery+pack) for more portability. It's definitely not made to be portable, but it's been nice to be able to do my business in the car or on the go if necessary.

@LindsayInNY: My Insurance only covered the PISA too, but when my LO was about a week old, someone listed an unused Freestyle on my mommy's group and I bought it for just $100. Totally worth it!

@LindsayInNY: I think it's just personal preference. It's strange, but I always pumped more with the Freestyle because it has a vibrationy feeling as opposed to just the sucking feeling of the PISA (so hard to explain). Plus, I liked the flanges that came with the Freestyle more (less painful for me even though tons of people online hate them).
Then when I became an EPer and went back to work, the portability was essential. Every single morning for months I pumped while drying my hair and putting on makeup, then at work once, then in my car on my commute home.
I used the PISA only one week after I got my Freestyle--later when my supply was dropping and I was worried it was the pump--(spoiler alert: it was just my boobs and my back to back illnesses, not the pump), but I realized that week how much I hated the PISA in comparison.

@Anagram: Interesting. I'm going to be pumping a lot at work and I don't know how easily I'll have access to an electrical outlet. But I also don't want to pay out of pocket for a pump. Ugh.

@simplyfelicity: My office has a pumping room with outlet but I visit law firms twice a day. I know they likely all have nursing rooms but I don't know how easy they will be to access. So I'm thinking feed in morning, pump at work around 9-9:30 a.m. and again between 12:30-1:30ish p.m. Then maybe again around 4-5 p.m. unless I can make it to daycare? It's that lunch time one that I worry about fitting in.

@LindsayInNY: I have the PISA because my insurance covered it. So far, so good. No complaints. Get a handsfree bra cause then you can still get things done while you pump, the way you could with a freestyle. (I fold laundry or blow dry my hair all the time.) There is no way to tell until you start pumping, but fwiw I was able to drop to 2 pumping sessions at work so you might be able to eventually skip the lunchtime pump if it doesn't work for your schedule. (I pump at 11 and 4). Plus if you are in a law firm finding a private place to pump, 99% of the time it will have an outlet.

@psw27: Can you do laundry/dry hair/etc. when there's an outlet nearby? For some reason I'm thinking I have no outlets anywhere, LOL! I know most of the firms I visit have areas, it's just a matter of getting access to them as a non-employee...

@LindsayInNY: Oh true... well I just put the pump on my night stand and stand at my bed folding laundry! So yes, I am tethered to the wall I guess but its rarely an issue. Its getting a little harder if LO is awake and scooting around! At my desk, I'm clearly right next to outlets so I can read or type as I pump at work.

@LindsayInNY: I work in a law firm and I'm not a lawyer not sure that we have pumping rooms, our NY office might since it was just remodeled. However, all of our offices have visitor offices and I would think you could be let use of of those. I just pumped at my desk and worked. Hands free bra all the way. I liked the Simple Wishes one.

@kayakgirl73: Oh, for sure... I worked at smaller firms that definitely did not have designated pumping areas! Now I work for a legal services vendor (think online research) and have regularly scheduled visits at Big Law firms. So I'm assuming most of them have them. Haven't asked though. Since you mentioned it though, I know I've seen visiting offices so that's an option too! Is Simple Wishes the brand of bra?

Be careful: some insurance companies cover the pump but not the carrying bag, etc. I have great insurance and it covered the pump itself, but if I wanted the tote I had to pay for it. They also wouldn't pay for the fancier version of a pump for me. WIth that said, I got the Medela Freestyle and I love it!

I love my Hygeia pump! I run it almost entirely unplugged and on battery and have never had issues. It's small and works great!

If a pump is 100% covered is definitely get the Medela Freestyle!!
