I have always heard you never bring it up till you get the job.

@Smurfette: @CupQuakeWalk: so I googled this and it seems you aren't suppose to ask - so crazy! Personally I wouldn't even apply for a position unless I knew the salary - what if its a huge pay cut?

I personally would not bring it up until there is an offer on the table. If you bring it up sooner, it may influence whether they make an offer or not. Once they have offered the job and you know they want you, you have the upper hand in salary negotiations.

Since there are several positions, they may be trying to decide which one would be the best fit before they bring up specifics like salary and benefits.

ETA: If they make an offer, tell them you appreciate the offer but would like to think it over/talk it over with DH/get back to them. And definitely be willing to counter their offer and ask for a higher salary or more benefits (i.e. extra PTO, etc). Most companies have a range of what they are willing to pay and they start their offer at the low end.

@MamaJ: I have been on 2 interviews in my life, lol, and on top of that, my field is government based salary so it is pretty obvious before even interviewing, how much they'll offer. But, my husband interviews people very regularly for his medical office and his biggest thing is when people bring up pay too early, some people even bring it up at first interviews. Those people don't get called back.

i can't believe it is taboo to ask about the salary range fir a position at the first interview. why should both parties waste their time on multiple interviews if the job pays way less than i would accept? salary is one of the most important factors in my decision! it's business. can i at least state what i made at my previous job and ask if that is within the tange alloted range for position? if they asked for salary requirements can i assume the number i gave falls within the range? how annoying!
