Please help! Neither DH or I are religious and have never attended a christening before. We have been invited to my friend's son's christening next month and have no idea what to get as a gift/keepsake.
He is 12 months if that makes any difference.

Depending how close you are to the family a children's illustrated or first Bible is a good gift. I gave a Spanish first Bible to my husband's god-son and the family was happy with the gift because their older son already had an English first Bible. Their family is bi-lingual.
Christian book stores have biblical coloring books, puzzles, and toys. A biblical soft doll would be appropriate; however some people may view dolls and action figures as idols.
Here are two links to faith-clothing for children. The non-denominational churches I attend do not require dressy attire, so onesies and tees with sayings would be appropriate for service or church social events.

Jewelry, picture frames, and money are common gifts.

When my kids were baptized the Godparents gave them a cross and a bible - everyone else pretty much gave cash.

R got a lot of books (not all religious), bible, wall hangings/frames, and some jewelry. People don't give cash in my family. The IL's do for bday and Christmas but they didn't bring her a gift for her baptism.

If you're not religious I would think money would be the easiest for you. If you want to get a gift, Hallmark stores usually have a baptism gift section. Most people gave LO checks, but she also got some religious themed stuffed animals and books. Her godfather gave her a gold cross necklace and her godmother gave her a gold bracelet.

There is this really cute book I bought my LO. I think it would make a great dedication/baptism gift!
It's not as personal as gifting a bible, but still a really sweet book. It's also very non-denominational. If it's too inexpensive you think, you could also gift some cash too.
Another thoughtful and unique gift you could get is a nice piggy bank.

Thank you everyone! I don't really think they are particularly religious either...at least I know they don't regularly go to church, so I'm assuming it's more out of tradition they want to get him christened. So I think religious gifts are not for me and the thought of giving money makes me a little uncomfortable, so I am leaning towards getting a nice print, or maybe a silver money box.

We are not religious either; for christening and baptism gifts in the past we have done things like a nice cross necklace (appropriate size for a child), a little (fake, usually) pearl necklace or bracelet, an engraved silver or pewter item (picture frame, spoon, cup, etc.). I know my husband also gifted our Godson a bible, but I don’t know what translation, etc.

@illumina: if you want to do a gift I ordered this and it turned out really nice

We do books, a kids' bible, or cross wall hanging, or cash usually.

I am not religious at all, but my go-to gift is a ceramic piggy bank with some cash. Other nice things we received for LO's baptism were a children's bible and an engraved silver cup.

Ask the parents.
I always do this for my nieces and nephews, and my SIL really appreciates it. Then they don't end up getting 12 bibles or a bunch of crosses that aren't really their style.
I'd either do that or money.
