My sister is due with her first 2 weeks before Christmas and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on gifts. Do I get him a toy or something fun for his first Christmas, or do I get something practical that really is for my sister since the baby will be at most 2 weeks old, or do I do some sort of combo?

I got my nephews who were both born in December ornaments for their first Christmases.

My baby is due 2 weeks before Christmas and we are already swimming in clothes and toys for him so I am hoping for things like gift cards so I can get diapers and boring stuff. I know that's not fun though. One thing you could consider is a photo package from a pro photographer. We got that for our niece when she was born and then SIL did the same for us when LO was born. It was nice because we had a whole year to use it.

I had a baby right before Christmas and it was nice to receive a personalized stroller blanket for him. Something with the name is nice since most people don't have that before baby id born!

I would get something he could use say 6 months from now - since by the time the next gift giving occasion occurs he will be 1
teething toys, rattles, etc

I love the idea of a photography package or a personalized item (onesie, blanket, lovey).
I would also suggest a personalized book with his name.

I would love board books! and other things to interact with baby. I have most of the necessities for little baby, so the fun little things that aren't just knick-nacks would be perfect.

I agree that something personalised with name and birthday is always nice. For my niece I made a blanket! (Late November birth, but I only got to see for xmas) I also looked into a personalised towel and bathrobe.

I would definitely AVOID an ornament or other seasonal knick-nack type item. I found that when we saw extended family at the holidays, my kids got boatloads of these things...that effect may be amplified with a brand new baby.
I like the idea of something personalized (stroller blanket, feeding spoons with the baby's name engraved, etc. If you go the book route, there are some very fun personalize books you can get - recordable ones or those where you insert your own photos. We have a few that came from Hallmark and my kids really enjoy them. One is called "I love you everywhere" and it sends the giver and child receiving the book on a bunch of silly rhyming adventures together (once you insert pictures).

@PinkElephant: yea i'm kind of figuring the sentimental ornaments and such will be provided by the grandparents and I didn't want to go super Christmasy since I want the gift to have use beyond a day or two
I'm thinking books, personalized or not and maybe something personalized or conversely maybe something super super generic like white onsies in bigger sizes then the 0-3months ones she got at her shower -
Christmas outfit if she doesn't have one already? I know I would've loved to have gotten that so I didn't have to buy it and use it once!

@snarkybiochemist: I also received first ornament, those hand print ornament kits (never used it, lol), jewelry with DD"s initial/birthstone... We DIY'd her newborn/Xmas photo's.. Maybe chip in with others and gift her a photo session? Otherwise I would've just wanted food, maybe nursing clothes?

My nephew is due around Christmas this year, and I got him and DS matching Hanna pajamas. They're somewhat Christmassy but they will be useful even if he is born late or they don't fit for a while.

As the mom of a boy born in December, please don't begin the trading of getting Christmas gifts for the birthday. Kids notice and it's difficult to explain to them why their cousin Jo-Jo gets separate presents for birthday and Christmas and they don't.
No one bought anything for my son's first Christmas ( he was 9 days old) but I would have loved for him to get some toys for the 6-9 month range, like a Lamaze animal, fabric blocks or board books.

Personally, we are always on board with donations to his college fund.
If that isn't how you want to go, I'd do a small fun thing for baby and a more practical gift as the main. You can use things not bought from the baby registry. And, if your sister is breastfeeding, the thing I wish I had invested in, early on, was some good nursing tanks. They are a life saver!

@snarkybiochemist: do you know the baby's name? If so, I got these for my nieces and nephews for Christmas last year. They are older, but they love that their name is throughout the book. Though your nephew will be a newborn, it's something that he'll have for a long time.
