I know when we go down to London, she just hangs out on the Underground with us or in the stroller. We don't take taxis, really, so that's never been an issue.

We just let her walk or she rides in the stroller or the ergo. I'd never lug the convertible around. Ick.

As someone who lives in a big city and needs to take taxis at least several times per week....it's just not reasonable to lug around a convertible all day. I try to avoid taxis with my toddler as much as possible, but when we absolutely have to take one, I use a Freedom Rider harness. There's a better harness called the Ride Safer, but it isn't suitable until 30 pounds (the Freedom Rider is good from 20, but honestly feels a bit big for my 21 pound 22 month old). **NOTE: when trying to add links to this post I realized that FreedomRide has gone out of business....)

I know these harnesses aren't generally recommended in the US, and they're not an ideal solution, but in my opinion, they are better than nothing or having a toddler strapped to you in the Ergo with a seatbelt in between the two of you.

Depending on the city I would probably just avoid cabs but in NYC it's 100 percent legal to ride without a car seat in cabs.

When we were in Israel, we walked with the stroller/ergo as much as possible, brought a light convertible carseat to use in cars when possible, and I just held him in a taxi on two occasions where it wasn't possible to have the carseat with us.
