I just got word that our daycare may be closing for either a full or half day on July 3 in addition to being closed July 4. This puts me in a bind because most of my team has asked off for that day and now i will need to be gone (husband is away for work that week). It's annoying too because it's a week out.
What is your daycare doing for the 3rd?

They are open all day on the 3rd.
I'm surprised you just found out that they are closing early though. Ours gives out their calendar schedule for the year+ around September (so our current one is for September 2016 - December 2017).

@Adira: They gave us a schedule at the beginning of the year, but they always ask to see how many students will be there certain weeks (Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Spring/Fall break). They told me today that only 16 kids were slated to be there on the 3rd so they were having an emergency conference call with corporate on Monday to see if they were going to close for a full or half day.

Our daycare is open on the third. Counts will be super low though, cause our town has a festival that entire week and many people take off work.

@avivoca: I don't understand why they don't just combine classes for those 16 kids. That's what ours does on days like July 3rd or around Christmas.

@Adira: I don't know either. I understand closing when only two kids show up the day after Thanksgiving (mine was going to be the third, but I kept her home after seeing that), but 16 kids is enough to keep open, I think.
I'll find out for sure on Monday.

I think ours is open. They publish a formal holiday schedule that stays the same from year to year, and I haven't heard differently yet. My husband is off that day, so we've toyed around with the idea of me taking off and keeping her out to do something fun for the family. I'd bet a lot of other people will be as well. Usually for days like that, they ask ahead of time who will be there so they can plan their staffing accordingly.

Ours is open. I could kind of understand them being closed for this year, since the 4th is a Tuesday and closing on the 3rd makes it a 4-day weekend. But that should have been decided and announced long before now. That's really inconvenient for people to have to change their work schedule at the last minute.

Surprisingly, our school is open.
Historically, we had two days off for 4th of July, but the parents complained (we have like 6-7 weeks of time off during the year, and it felt pretty ridiculous).

Open. One of my favorite things about our daycare is it is open every single weekday of the year other than the few major holidays. No random days when we have to find backup care, ever.

Closed; however, they let us know well in advance that they would be closed. Are you able to contact their corporate office and complain? I hate to make people work when it's not necessary, but giving you less than a week's notice on a holiday weekend is not helpful to working parents. You depend on that care. Had you known well in advance, you might be able to take that day off, but it's frustrating finding out with such little notice.

They are open. They had a sign up sheet for everyone to indicate what days next week they will be in or out and the center will staff accordingly. Honestly I would be furious if my day care closed with little warning because of low attendance. Also, we pay the same every week despite holidays or closings for weather, etc. Will you still have to pay for the 3rd, because if so, I would go even more ballistic. Overhead costs are part of running a business, I would expect my day care to deal with that.

@avivoca: Ours is open 7/3. I'd be furious if the school decided to close (after previously communicating they would be open) - especially only giving 1 week's notice.
Could you hire one of the daycare's teacher's to babysit on 7/3?

Unless you're getting a refund for that day, I'd be furious if my daycare decided to just close (or do a half-day) with only a week's notice. Especially since 16 kids is PLENTY to keep them open.

Open on July 3. When there are very few kids but the daycare is scheduled to be open, they sometimes combine locations (there are two of this particular daycare within a couple miles) and close one if they can.

It's a sign up day for us. They put a sheet on the door with a notice that they'll close if less than 10 students sign up. There's always enough, lol.

@Bluebonnet: no, funds are tight enough as is and I will still have to pay for the full week. We only get a discount if they are out for a full week on vacation (not if they are out for a full week sick.

@PawPrints: This is the first time in 3+ years that I have had to deal with this. When i'm paying well over $1k per month for care, I expect them to stay open.

@avivoca: The standard in our area is that most centers are closed all the time, for days attached to holidays and for random teacher workdays or whatever - AND the price standard is $2K/month. It's nuts.
