I'm so miserable from the one depo shot that I got back in July. Someone please tell me my body is going to go back to normal and all the side effects I'm still dealing with are going to go away soon!
I wish you could sue somebody over this

Hair loss, mood swings, still bleeding, acid reflux joint pain, tired all the time. Not to mention 6 months of breastfeeding where my milk supply was horrible due to the shot. I just want my old self back and I'm so furious

@crystbum: I had a crappy experience as well! I got my first shot and had AF for 3 months straight (not always heavy, but every single day). I was told at my next shot that that usually goes away after the second dose. Got my second shot and another 3 months of AF! Needless to say, I didn't go back for another ever again.
I've had so many friends that never got AF, no side effects at all. It seemed so perfect.
But no.
This is also why I can't bring myself to try Mirena. It's so perfect for some many of my friends but I also know, personally, a handful of folks where it embedded or broke through the uterine wall. I KNOW that would be me, too.
You do eventually go back to normal, just give it time to get out of your system.

I leveled out after a few months on depo, personally. It put me into menopause so once I got to that point, it sort of just chilled out there.
how long is it in your system for? I got a shot every month and they told me it would take a year to get out since i was on such a high dose (for my endometriosis)

And the worst is that this was my very first use of any birth control whatsoever. I wish I would have done my research prior to getting it, however, I was 6 weeks postpartum and just trying to be "smart"..

@crystbum: I'm sorry you're going through this. I've had a bad experience with birth control and it feels so frustrating and really brings home that the tiny fine print "some negative reactions may include..." is just not enough warning to make informed choices. Just know this will pass. I use a non-hormonal IUD which I like a lot. I miss some of the benefits of the BCP (clear skin, super predictable period, no pms) but feel so much better overall.
Also, you are still in the postpartum period. It's possible some of this is related to pp hormones and breastfeeding hormones and not just the depo. Can you talk to your doctor about what's going on and see if maybe you could take something to deal with those issues?

@Little Misters Mom: yes I guess I could try but honestly I'm so pissed at my doctor because when I originally went to get the shot I asked if it would affect my milk supply with bf and they said absolutely not. I also asked the nurses there if they had heard any reviews on the shot and of course they all said "no we haven't heard anything bad about it, its just like any other birth control." Then, I went back six weeks after I had started the shot and explained all the issues I was having and they wanted to put me on an estrogen pill to help even out the bleeding. I did ask again if that would have an effect on my milk supply and again they said no. Thankfully, I had a good support system with lactation consultants via the hospital I gave birth and they informed me that any other estrogen pill would bring my milk supply down even more and that the shot originally is not even recommended to be given postpartum because it does affect your milk supply a ton!! So I feel like they don't know what they're doing at that office and any questions I have, they just guess their answers.

@Little Misters Mom: so I was smart enough to not get on the estrogen pill. But its like no one knows how to answer any of my questions correctly and I basically learn things through the Internet not through my doctor's office. Which is sad!

@crystbum: That's really frustrating. Is seeing a new doctor a possibility? I would be furious about getting bad information. That said, I actually do like my doctors and still find that I need to research things myself and occasionally raise concerns that he wasn't aware of (particularly about stuff related to nursing). I'm glad you have good LC support though, that is so critical. Maybe you could see a midwife who does well woman care, they tend to be more in tune with these issues (but I know switching doctors can be a huge hassle if not impossible).

@crystbum: Yikes, depo is a pretty hardcore first bc to go on. it, by far, had the most symptoms, in my experience (and i've been on almost everything, it seems!)

I am so sorry you have been through the ringer.
I have tried many many kinds of hormonal BC. While depo wasn't too bad for me, several pills were. And if my worst side-effect-producing pill had been unstoppable (as the depo is for a little while), I would have been really upset. It took a lot of trial and error to find the right one for me, but I was thrilled when I did (clear skin and such minus the negatives).
I hope you find something that works better for you.

@Crystalbum: I'm shocked that they are still recommending Depo to women, especially PP. There are so many potential side effects. I was lucky not to experience many of them, but what I did really affected my quality of life: decreased sex drive, lack of interest in sex, and depression. I was on it for several years and definitely became a different person once I came off.

I had my first (and last) depo shot in July. It was HORRIBLE. I gained weight, was moody, ate constantly, and sex was the worst. It was so painful.
Never again!!

I was on depo when I was younger like 18 and was on it for about 5 years. I didn't have any side effects. After 5 years, my dr said I could stay on it only if I started taking calcium supplements.
@crystbum: why did you or your dr suggest depo? I took depo because I was bad with daily BCPs. After I got off depo, I switched to the nuvaring. Put the ring in for 3 weeks the take off. Just as easy has the depo shot.
