I didn't but I love the concept. I think in terms of childcare, it'd give us the opportunity to utilize some family care (ie my mom come for one break, MIL for another break, etc.) whereas with a huge summer break, I feel like our options would be more limited to daycare for those three months.

Yes! From 3rd grade until 8th (there are no year round high schools here) and then I taught in a year round school for 5 years. Definitely planning to send my kids to one as well

Yes. I was homeschooled and my mom had us continue our lessons in the summer so that we didn't fall behind or forget what we'd learned in the school year.

I did for one year. It was great as a kid, but I think it would be really challenging as a parent.

I remember for several years of school (between kindergarten & maybe like 3rd grade), we had school on Sat every other week or something like that.

I did, and I really liked it. We still had about a six-week summer break, but we had three other long breaks (two weeks in the fall, winter, and spring) to make up for the other six weeks.

I did for grades 8 & 9. I really enjoyed it. Our classrooms were smaller, our vacations were frequent. My marks improved.

I felt like it was great for me.

we don't have any around where I grew up, so it is fascinating to me!

@Mamaof2: I haven't thought too hard about it, but why does it sound like a nightmare for you?

@.twist.: Who would watch my kids for 2 weeks in April, the month of July, the month of December, etc?

With summer its easy - summer camp June- August! Unless of course year round schools provide some type of daycare during the "off" times

@Mamaof2: here year round schools are very common and there are a zillion "track out" programs that operate like mini summer camps. There are some that are run by the ymca and are more general interest/camp like, and then there are art camps, science camps, etc. Childcare here isn't an issue. In fact a lot of families find it easier to manage because the expense is spread throughout the year rather than parents having to pay for the whole summer at once.
