I had a semi-private. Just me and another girl. Her and I actually became friends. I didn't find it that problematic. She would pull her curtain if she needed to or vice versa.

I could see maybe if one baby was crying more than the other or something, but my babe was in the NICU and hers was super quiet. For the time I was there it was no big deal!

This sounds like our situation. We did pay for the private room--I think it was like $600 or something? I stayed 2 nights I believe. It was worth it to have DH be able to be there--he would have had to leave if it had been semi private. It was also WELL WORTH IT to have my own private bathroom!

Nope. I was in a 6 bed ward. I actually kind if enjoyed it. It was nice being around other women who were going through the same thing. There was another woman who was stuck there for like 3 days with me and we kind of bonded.

Being American, I was VERY anxious about having to be on the ward. It didn't end up being a bad experience. DH had to leave overnight too.

There weren't any private rooms available my first night, we only got into the room around three am. The next night there still weren't any rooms and my roommate and her boyfriend and their twins fought all night, it was awful. Thankfully the next night a private room opened and they moved me.
We ended up spending $800 for the private room for two nights and it was so so so worth it. Trying to figure out breast feeding with a crying newborn while your roommate curses out her baby daddy and then yells at you for waking her up was so difficult.

I was in a private room but that's all our hospitals offer. I liked having my husband there for comfort reasons but I didn't technically NEED him there.

I was on a ward for 4 night pre-baby and 1 night after. I'm not a great sleeper and so being on the ward meant I had virtually no sleep for almost a week. It was awful. But that first night with baby was the worst bit. She cried and cried, I couldn't latch her without help, I struggled to get out of bed because of my stitches, I was terrified to leave her to go to the toilet. I would have done anything to have my husband there to reassure me and to help. So, personally, I would pay for the private room.

Our hospital only has private rooms and Hubs stayed the entire time that we were there. Honestly, I probably would have paid for the private room. And I really liked that Hubs was with me the entire time and never had to leave. I relied on him so much in the beginning!

Private was standard for us, but I would've paid for it if needed! Having DH there was important to me, especially since getting out of bed to get the baby was hard.

@stargal: YES. Post partum issues in a shared bathroom. There's nothing like finding someone's bloody fingerprints all over the sink and knowing the blood fell out of her vagina (never mind what infections might be in it)

We only had the option of a private room! I am glad I didn't have to share because I had no idea what I was doing... it woulda been awkward with someone else there!

@pui: I would probably do the semi private for a night and then try to get a private the next night. I'd rather risk one bad roomie than multiple bad roomies!

@pui: It's hard for me to answer your question because my hospital didn't have an option, so I'm not really sure what a semi-private room or the ward would be like! I'm guessing I'd prefer semi-private though just because it's bad enough when your own baby is waking you up all night, I can't imagine having everyone's babies waking me up!

Yes, we did. I don't think I would've liked being in a shared room!

Yes. My hospital only has private rooms (for triage, delivery, and recovery), and I didn't even know that some women don't have that luxury here until HB!

I couldn't imagine not having my husband stay with me after our first DD because I had torn so badly I couldn't even get out of bed. Our hospital doesn't have a nursery, so there's no way I could have gotten up and down and done all the diaper changes by myself throughout the night.

I would have been okay not having him there after our second because my delivery was better and I was more mobile.

I was in a 4 bed ward and it was totally fine, though I only had to stay 1 night. I was surprised how quiet it was...I guess because the babies were so new, they slept pretty much all day and night! If I had to stay longer, then maybe I would consider paying for private.

Dh couldn't stay and honestly, it was fine...though I didn't have any tearing or complications so I was pretty mobile. LO and I just slept pretty much from when Dh left at 8pm until he came back at 8am...apart from feeds, obviously!

Everyone at my hospital gets their own private room and bathroom. Each room also has a second bed for your partner. I think it's definitely worth paying for! It's such a vulnerable and exciting time--I would have been really uncomfortable sharing a room and I can't imagine not having my husband there. Plus I was SO HOT after delivering that I was basically naked the whole 2 days we were there. If you can afford it I definitely think you should get a private room!
