Looking for recommendations. I know Oregon isn't the most diverse state, so bear with me. We are looking at the possibility of little O staying with us forever. Still a ways off, but we are getting closer and want to at least consider the future. We live in a rural, conservative area that lacks in diversity. She is bi-racial. We strongly believe that it would be better to raise her in an area with more racial diversity (as well as, ideally, a more progressive area-we are two moms and don't want her to be singled out more than she already will be).

We are looking for an area that is:

-reasonably affordable cost of living (Bay Area would be great but is unrealistic for us)
-racial/ethnic diversity so that she isn't the only kid of color in her class/neighborhood
-we are open to small cities and smaller towns. We would like to be able to have our goats and ponies still, so probably not living right in the city. This is the hard part-combining this kind of life with more racial diversity.

Any ideas? We've thought about Portland, and probably in that case would end up giving up our ponies and goats (although I heard goats were legal in the city limits?!) But are there towns/small cities we aren't thinking of?
