Do you ask the original owner of hand me down clothing before you sell them?
I think I might have sold a piece of clothing that my sister handed down to me. At the time, she was one and done. Now, I'm not sure. I didn't even think to ask her. Uh oh. I honestly didn't think it was hers. I thought I bought it from another consignment sale. Oops. I did talk to the DH and he think we still have it because he saved it. I hope we still have it.

Nope, I don't ask before I donate...unless they told me to hang onto it at the time they gave me the clothes!

I don't get anything handed down but I guess it's a good idea to ask if it's something kind of pricey that they could sell themselves like a fancy outfit in good condition or baby gear. Because if they knew ahead of time you were going to turn around and sell it maybe they would have asked for some $ instead of just gifting it to you. But not 100% necessary either.

I just about always assume that hand-me-downs are temporary loans, unless explicitly specified that I get to keep them.

I generally check if the original owner wants them back or not, but most of the time they've said upfront that they're done with the items.

I assume the owner wants things back unless they say otherwise. I got a few things from friends and as my lo outgrew them I put them into a bag to return them- but in sure a few items got mixed up. When I lent a friend clothes I expected the same- she would return most but some things would get lost or too dirty to save or whatever. I definitely wouldn't sell something without asking but I could see donating.
Also most hand me downs are in pretty rough shape after two or three kids wearing them.

I check just out of courtesy. It was mostly from my sister and we decided together what to sell, give away, and toss.

Yeah, one of my friends let me borrow her maternity clothes but she said she would like them back. She made sure to label them all. I have all the maternity clothes boxed up. I wasn't planning on selling them.

@pastemoo: yeah, I think I asked because she gave me a rock n play that I took with me across the country (in my luggage) and she said she was one and done. I asked a few times. Maybe there was a misunderstanding. I haven't sold any baby equipment. I think I'm going to have label everything I think I got handed down to me, so this doesn't happen again.

I ask up front. If something is not labeled with initials of who wants it back or don't know who's it is- it's fair game.

Not speaking from personal experience (yet), but I would assume all hand me down clothes wouldn't be asked for back unless they specified at the time of giving them to me. For gear, I'd probably ask first before selling.

Clothes that were given to me that were expected back we wrote initials inside and returned when DD grew out of the size. If you don't ask for something back before they get lost in someone elses collection, you have no claim to it.

Nope. I've never had anyone want any hand me downs back so we sell or donate when we are done with them. I probably wouldn't take loaner hand me downs...it would be too hard to keep track!

I get the majority of hand me downs from one friend; we already talked beforehand about what she doesn't care about, and what she'd like to possibly hand down to her SIL who is also my friend down the road.

Usually the hand me downs I just donate unless gear and then I give back as it's usually a loan and then they can sell if they want too. I wouldn't feel comfortable making money off something I did not originally purchase.

@LuLu Mom: The hand me downs I got were given to me. (I never asked for them but took them to be polite). I'm going to say about a big portion of the clothes I own are gifts, purchased new or I bought from consignment sale. The hand me downs I got was a small portion. Honestly, I have no idea which ones were given to me and which ones weren't. With twins, I don't have time for that. I hardly remember which outfits were given to me by the gifter. DH has been bugging me to get rid of the clothes and so I decided to consign.
Anyway, my sister said she had no attachment to the clothes she gave me. As far as I know, she still might be one and done or she might be on the fence about another. I'm not going to ask her because I'm sure others are bugging her about having another. She just didn't realize her attachment to the particular outfit in question until she saw it on my son and so she simply asked if I still had it when I told her I was consigning. All seems to be well here. But yeah, definitely need to ask if there are any strings attached to hand me downs in the future. Definitely should tell people to label them if they want it back. Also, I certainly don't look at hand me downs as money makers. I just had a bunch of unused new baby items to sell and wanted to sell some of the items I've received as gifts or purchased myself. I guess the items that were hand me downs were missed. My intention was never to make money on hand me downs.

I don't really see consigning used clothes as "making money", mostly because I would essentially be trading them in to get more used clothes, which was the intent of the giver in the first place. I kind of feel like if you give something to someone, you don't really get a say in what they do with it... Loaning and giving are not the same thing, and I would expect it to be clear when a person handed something over one way or the other. I think it is interesting that people would assume things were a loan. That would have never crossed my mind.
