Do you get any kind of holiday gift from your direct manager? I've been managing two people this year, and it's pretty much my first time in an official supervisory position. I've been thinking of getting them something for the holidays and am curious about what is typical. We do get a bonus from our company at this time of year, so this would just be a small gift from me.
What, if anything, have you received (or given) as holiday gifts?

No, not directly. I work in a pretty big office though. The higher-ups will bring in edible treats to share.
DH manages a couple program assistants and doesn't plan to get either of them gifts. They do a holiday party and smaller office lunches, but no real gift giving. I guess it just depends on your office culture and if you want to set that precedent

I don't, and I wouldn't expect it so I think any small gift would be very nice. A previous manager used to give each of us gifts from Crate and Barrel. One year a cheese serving set, one year kitchen decor, I can't remember what else but I thought it was very nice of him to get us something.

Not in the corporate world. When I was in college I worked at a family restaurant and the owners gave me a really lovely lavender sweater. I felt obligated to send them something so I ordered a basket of Florida oranges for the family.

Last year my manager got me a small Sbux card and a jar of homemade jam. I suspect that this year it will be similar. It's not much but I certainly appreciated it!

My manager knows I have a sliiight shopping addiction and usually gives me a gift card to Anthro or Kate Spade.

No, I work for a large company so they give out the gifts/bonuses. I know other departments throw a Christmas party and/or lunch but not mine. Plus he had a heart attack last month and has not been in the office since so if anything we should be getting him something to help ease his recovery.

No, but I am on a large team of 15 people. When I worked for a small company, I did receive personal gifts for Christmas.

So it seems like something small would definitely be fine -- the only reason I started thinking of it is my manager gave me some chocolates and toys for my cats (I'm pretty obsessed with them, lol) last year and I thought it was nice. Maybe a Starbucks gift card? Or I was also thinking a pretty calendar, since we have a lot of events and things to keep track of?

Before I left my corporate job I was a manager and I neither gave nor received gifts. My husband is head of his department and be neither gives nor receives gifts.

I honestly don't remember but I don't think she has. She does give us birthday cards and one year gave me a gift card for the local liquor store! Haha.

I don't think so, mostly other women in the office that would do little gifts for others. And we get a gift from the owner of the company. My old manager used to tho at my old job. I loved him! He would get us Sephora giftcards!

My dept head takes us to lunch. We usually all throw money into an envelope for a gift to the Director. I tend to add a little something, though "gifting up" to someone who earns triple what I make is a little annoying to me. Apparently I'm a scrooge.

I've given cookies and small poinsettias to put on their desk (local garden center has them for less than $2 each.). I've received chocolates and giftcards from my managers.

I never did until I worked at my current job. I work for a decently sized company but they're pretty old school. My boss gives us all $50 to Binny's (local liquor store) and his direct reports pool together our money to get him a gc somewhere. We usually give $20 each. Then I get each of my direct reports a gc (usually to Target) for about $20 each. They have normally put $10 into a pot and then buy me something with that.
@Mrs. Champagne: Last year I was just pregnant and my boss asked me if I still wanted the gc to the liquor store. I said yes and used it to buy a really nice bottle of champagne to celebrate my LO's arrival.

The past two years our manager was supposed to take us out for lunch but he never scheduled it and it never happened either year. Needless to say we aren't holding our breath that a holiday lunch will ever happen.

@Bibliolove: I don't think it makes you a scrooge to feel that way at all! I would feel the same. I honestly hope neither of the people I manage give ME something, I feel like this is a good time for me to thank them for their work, but I would never expect or even want something from them

My manager at my previous job took the department out to a fabulous dinner at a super hip restaurant and we visited a museum. My husband manages 3 people and usually takes them out for a nice lunch and gives them each a gift card.

My manager gets a gift for DS and I think that's nice of him. Totally not necessary!
